So I have a raidmax 620 running two 8800gts 640 (g80) and a q6600 b3 clocked to 3.4 ghz.

Now I haven't had a problem with the computer turning off or anything but when I run sli gameplay slows way down and kinda crawls when I take out the card everything smooths up is this a power problem due the small psu?
 
So it works fine with one card but not two? Does it give any messages about being underpowered like "To protect your hardware from potential damage or causing a potential system lockup, the graphics processor has lowered its performance"? Make sure you have the latest drivers. Download RivaTuner and check your GPU clock speeds with just one card then try it with both of them.

P.S. Also check the Amp requirements for the GTS against what the power supply is able to put out. 2 GTS's may be too much (Amp wise) for the supply where 1 GTS will work just fine.
 
I get no warning about low power but I heard that laggy or really slow like performance could be linked to under powered psus? am I correct with that?
 
Correct I had the same issue with a defective 1000W supply and a single 8800GT. Nvidia sentinel said the performance was being reduced to prevent damage. When I ran 3dMark06 with the underpowered GT it only scored 1000. Seriously. It was terrible but the card is fine and I got a new supply and another GT and now everything is wonderful with a 12000 score.
