Can someone tell me if theres any chance a 230V PSU would run a P4 system? If not can you suggest a cheap psu that will, or at least what voltage I'll need.

Cheers

I'm not sure if you meant 230v or 230watt.. If volts then as long as you plug the power cord into a 230v (220-240 depending on who's saying it) it should work fine.

Now if you're meaning 230w, it depends on the actual CPU speed, what other components are being used, and the quality or age of the PSU. However, I'm inclined to say no it won't be enough.

Quite right you are too.

Its actually a 250Watt PSU. Its going to be running (or not!) a P4 524 (3GHz), cd burner, dvd rom, floppy and a sata hdd.

What kind of 250W PSU?

And what video card? On board video?

I'm gonna be using an old agp card, that the box is already running. Don't know what card it is exactly. I'll have to look!

actually, the higher capacity not waste.
example:if you used 500W power supply, your systerm need 230W, the reset of the 500w's power not used fully(270W not used)

I'd say no, that's going to be underpowered, unless it's one hell of a 250w brick.

Find a nice, cheap 350w fortron or so

I think there's a pretty good chance it'd work, especially if it's a decent brand. At work I have a dell GX280 w/ similar setup running from a 250w supply, and have run an A64 w/ 6800GT from a 230w psu for a while at home.

Just don't blame me if it blows up and burns your house down ;)

Are you serious?

I thought it just wouldn't power up, but your telling me it'll pop.

If a PSU (PowMax comes to mind) doesn't have any or adequate protection built in then yes it'll fizzle, pop, blow up, explode, ....

What is the brand and model number on its label??

The guy I'm doing this for has just said to put a new psu in anyway if I think it best.

So guys recommend me a reasonably priced psu that'll do the job, not a PowMax!

Cheers

Mine are higher quality.

than a fortron? I question that :p. They're all about the same, and he doesn't need anything super fancy.

I too would put Enhance above Fortron. Very likely quieter and higher efficiency too.

Grey with a silver grille vs black with a silver grille.

:p
