hey guys, i've been completely out of the loop for a good PSU so i seek some advice :D
i'll be building a rig for my friend with an e6700, a 7900gt and an evga 680i mobo. i'm assuming that a psu around 500w would be fine to run it, but i want to double check.
thanks in advance guys :)

go with a OCZ GameXStream 700 watt power supply @ newegg.com

Best PSU i ever purchased. Very stable and quiet. Supports SLI too

If you intend on sli with g80's then get the Corsair HX 620. If you don't, the 520 should be good. and I'd pass on the GXS for the ripple issue. And that it's not modular.

ah thanks for the input guys. btw, he already got the c2d for free from a friend whose dad works at Intel ;)
any recommendations on silverstone PSUs? or any modular ones? but that corsair hx520 does look nice :D

Silverstone Element 500W Plus would be just fine for that rig (plus future upgrades). I'd recommend either that PSU, or Seasonic S12 series, which is even better. Either Seasonic S12 430W or Seasonic S12 500W. Both are excellent power supplies, very powerful, stable, efficient and very quiet. One of the best PSUs on the market today.

I have Seasonic S12 500W powering rig in my signature, and I can only recommend this PSU. It's most quiet component in my system.

That said, even Seasonic S12 380W would power both my rig and one you mentioned, but if you want to have "breathing room" and power for future upgrades (8800GTX, SLI, Quad procesor, more ram, more HDDs etc.) go for S12 430W or S12 500W.

If you'd like modular PSU, take a look at Seasonic M12 series.
