After almost two weeks of mostly positive PlayStation 3 news, the numbers are in for Sony’s second week of sales in the UK and it isn’t a pretty picture. Sales for hardware were down 82% and software 60% in only the second week of sales.

A spokesperson for Chart Track confirmed the figure to GamesIndustry.biz this afternoon, stating: "Yes, sales of PS3 hardware have dropped by 82 per cent." Last week, Chart Track revealed that the PlayStation 3 had sold 165,000 units in the first two days following the launch, making it the fastest-selling home console in the UK.

DO NOT BLAME THE MESSENGER!

Just wanted to say that before everyone started in with the "you only post BAD PS3 news" stuff.

Casino Royale helped sell the first batch of PS3s and now everyone that wanted one and got one, the sales plumet.

dammit i was just gonna whine about that :(

I guess i will whine that the 360 elite only has HDMI 1.2 then.

Heh. I love how some of us beat you to respond. :D

We should figure out how to put a positive spin on this, for Steve's sake.

Perhaps "Sony manufactured and shipped so many PS3's, that every household in europe had one within the first week; subsequently sales plummet 82% since there's no one left to sell them to"

like I said in the thread last week about the PS3 UK sales, give it a week for them to screw it up

Heh.

"Sony, having announced an effort to end the world's suffering due to a PS3 shortage, did so well to jam even more PS3s onto shelves that store shelves actually broke! Customers were given discounts for the damaged consoles, which ultimately lead to shoppers leaving stores with more units in their possession than they had planned.

Meanwhile, despite issuing retailers a credit reimbursement for the damaged, discounted consoles, Sony felt relieved when more units were sold than expected as a result of a two-day financial frenzy. Having sold 165,000 units in those two days, Sony is once again facing a sales plummet and supposed PS3 shortage in the UK."

Sony is polishing brass on the Titanic...

You gotta look good when you are going down! Haven't your mother ever told you to always wear clean underwear in case something was to happen to you? :D ;)

Hey why isn't there any good news posted Steve?!?!? Your biased mofo!!

Heh jk...anyways I am going to laugh at the people that say the PS3 is going to fail, and end up buying one here within a year...:p

Poor steve. Look on the bright side though. At least you aren't a PR for sony. Otherwise you would really have it bad.

It's over priced. Finally us Brits have had the sense to say "Hold on - £400+ for a console that's basically half the price elsewhere. No thanks"

Every shop I've seen, PS2's on the shelves, often in double figures.

Meanwhile, can I find a Wii? Can I hell!

Maybe in 12-24 months when the PS3 is down to <£250 and there are a LOT more games, a LOT more BR movies, and a LOT more HDTV's in homes....then it will begin to sell at a steady rate.

Doug

exactly.

I'd actually be prepared to pay £300-350 for a 20GB version, but Sony doesn't think that there's a market for them...

simple math, that unless there was a massive shipment in less then a week to the UK there are not enough players there to do anything more then 80% the launch week
.........

article is BS. oh noes...PS3 isn't selling 200k units a week in the U.K. no shit sherlock. sensationalism(*sp) at it's best.

so that would mean, approx. the writers of the article were expecting 800k in the first month for U.K. alone.

You have the amazing ability to read the hidden words in articles, since nowhere in there did they state or imply that the ps3 would or should sell that many, or that they were expecting anything.

It's simply an article that states the current sales numbers. The only one being sensational is your ass for whining that someone pointed out the hard figures. Boo hoo?

Thats so true, Wii's can't be found (console only) anywhere, even in the US.

I call SNAFU,

All the die hards were able to pickup their console on day 1. Now, you are just getting other "casuals" who are picking them up slowly.

The rest of the demand will have to be driven by content.

I personally want a PS3 but there is very little content to make me want to go to the store and by a PS3. A few decent RPGs drop and I will have one.

The same with the 360, other than they never seem to have RPGs, thus my reason for one not sitting on my shelf.

On the other hand. It has given me time to research better 1080p LCDs and receivers that do HDMI switching.

Don't feel sorry for me but, to put my request into perspective, I will relay to you a PM I received (name withheld to protect the stupid):

Steve, the messenger may get shot when they use the world "plummet" in a headline. That word shows bias. I always value the [H] as being unbiased..but bling words like plummet reduce credibility IMO.

"decline sharply" would be a much better an sanitized statement. If you don't want to be viewed as biased, don't use words that smack of bias in subject titles.

People go as far as wanting me to CHANGE the CNN - GameIndustry - AP headline because it upsets them. What the?!?!?!

I am not sure what part of "we just post the news, not make it..." that some people don't get but you can see where DwtD can get old (dealing with the dumb) :(

Hmm. Perhaps you should have used "Inversely experienced a dramatic increase" ?

when you see titles such as "PlayStation 3 hardware sales plummet 82 per cent", that is sensationalism. if i'm a whiny ass, then that would put you what...ass on his high horse.

and i guess you have no ability to comprehend anything unless it is specifically spelled out for you?

boo hoo?

What verb would you use to describe 82% reductions? Slight decline? Inverse acceleration? Faster than rapid decline?

If the stock market fell 82% what verb would you use? If the price of a new car fell 82%, what verb then?

You're pissed and calling things "sensational" simply because you don't like the correct verb to be applied to a product you like. That's a textbook definition of whiny fan-boyism. Congrats!

You think 'plummet' is sensationalizing an 82% decrease? It's okay if you bought a PS3. Stand proudly by it.

I bet you're throwing around 'sensationalism' because you've seen it in other threads. If 82% doesn't warrant the 'plummet' descriptor, you better give us a better one.

If someone can post a reason for me to spend 600 dollars on a console when i can get a computer for cheaper that plays games and EVEN GETS PORN. Lemme know :p

Once you watch pron in HD there is no going back ;) And it can play games. Perhaps you enjoy pron on a 17" display, but I prefer the 60... bigger is better ;) lol

I rolled my eyes because comments like that are unneeded here as it just starts flamewars and goes without any credibility.

wow, seriously? "even" (and i use the term liberally) a 50% drop would constitute "plummeting". i'm sorry you have to deal with so many morons.

see above. i think the ps3 is an amazing piece of hardware, so don't go cry bias at me..

"plummet", verb: to plunge; to decline suddenly or steeply

nurrrrrrrrrr :|

Computers have been HD for quite some time now, and pcs can play games too, more of them infact. and I have a 20" Widescreen Thank ya :p

Ever heard of this lovely gadget called an HTPC? :p My HTPC can do everything a PS3 can, including HD playback thanks to my Xbox HD-DVD drive (and DRM free thanks to SlySoft :p).

You are correct the PS3 is a media center and not simply a game console and $600 isn't too bad considering a friend of mine purchased an $800 mac mini to do his HTPC work.

Sure you can build a HTPC much cheaper than a mac mini, but will it be as smooth in its operation as the PS3, probably not. I have an Xbox with XBMC and is hands down better than 98% of the HTPC setups I've played with, most are clunky and take tons of tweaking and fine tuning. Sure you could keep a wireless mouse and keyboard to help with navigation and operation, but most don't want to do that.

Not to mention to play those better looking PC games you'll need a pretty powerful processor and GPU so than the noise/energy benefit you have with a HTPC goes out the window.

The PS3 isn't for everybody, but I thinks it's a great bit of kit esp. if you aren't a hands on type of person. Odd that I make that point as I am a hands-on/configuring/tweaking type of guy. I've built all the PCs for my family and I'm resposible for setting up my brother's CarPC.
