a guy on here told me a ps3 wasnt worth folding on, i by no means have a powerful computer, and i need all of my power to do games and such and have none to spare, opinions on 2 things 1. are ps3s good at folding, and or more powerful than my computer. 2. a ps3 doesnt pull much juice from the wall right? i was under the impression the cell processor was good for this sort of thing.

for the power usage no they really arent worth it. they do between 900-1000 PPD. to give you an idea, an 8800GS stock will do roughly 4000 PPD on the gpu3 client. an overclocked 8800GS will do 5100-5600 PPD on the gpu3 client. then consider the fact that an 8800GS uses about 1/3 of the power of a ps3. it just doesn't make it worth folding on the ps3.

the current rig you are using. the cpu will do 3500-4500 PPD on the smp client and use roughly 100w. the HD5770 i wouldn't fold with since the current ATI client sucks. hell your laptop will have higher PPD then the PS3 at way less power usage(not that I'm saying you should fold on it but that's just an example).

I agree with sirmonkey, but if you do not mind the higher electric usage, stanford will use whatever you produce.

lol i would never fold on that its like a hair dryer during light gaming loud and hot and cashes in those 6200 3dmarks on 06. what if i made a spare computer with a pentium d 930 oc'ed on watercooling to 4.5 with a 8800gts 320 superclocked edition or a celeron d 356 at 5.2 with gma 950,what kind of PPD would i be looking at? i want to help the [H]ard team #33 out but can afford to right now on my computer

you're better off spending 30 bucks on a sunbeam core contact heatsink. will fix the hair drier problem plus allow you to hit 3.6ghz on the processor. way better option then dropping a couple hundred bucks on a pentium D 930.. even at 4.5Ghz i think it will only do 4-5k PPD using twice the amount of power compared to your current system.

the heatsink is your best option in my opinion. also i'd watch craigslist or fleabay or hell check out flecom's FS thread and snag one of his GTX 260's and throw that in your system on the extra pci-e slot. overclock it to 630/1512/1100 while running the gpu2 client that will be good for 7-8k PPD. you can leave it running while you game on your 5770 as well. or look for an 8800GS 386mb(9600GSO 386mb) or 8800GT(9800GT) or 8800GTS(9800GTX) 512mb or GTS 250 for dirt cheap and throw that in there..

8800GS stock 3800-4000 PPD GPU3 client overclocked to 700/1728/1000 5100-5600 PPD gpu3 client

8800GT stock 4300-4800 PPD gpu3 client overclocked to 630/1782/1000 5600-6000 PPD gpu3 client

8800GTS 512mb stock 5000-5500 PPD gpu3/gpu2 clients overclocked(not sure on the clocks for this card) 5900-6100 PPD gpu3/gpu2 client.

starting to make myself cry suggesting nvidia gpu's since i'm an AMD person.. :( stupid pande group..

err now that i see you are using a 430w psu the gtx 260 is probably out of the question. but you might be able to fit an 8800GS or 8800GT within those limits with the 5770 still installed. though zero82z would know more about that then i would since hes the PSU guru.

You'd be looking at probably around 1000-1500PPD from the CPU and around 3000PPD for the GPU with that Pentium D system. However, I would say that you really should consider folding on your main rig and just exiting the client when you want to do something CPU-intensive like gaming. That would give you some pretty nice production. If you can afford the power (or have free utilities), then by all means, fold on the PS3 and the Pentium D system as well.

i was talking about the laptop lol it sounds like a hair dryer damn alienware. im also a amd person, i prefer them, but i don't make a big fuss either way. i have all the stuff i mentioned, i wasn't planing on buying anything. i have the pentium d and celeron laying on my desk, i plan on putting the pentium in a light duty lan rig soon. also where you talking about a cooler on my main rig to hit 3.6? i have a great cooler already its in the sig, its a raidmax x3 its huge and works awesome at 3.4 it never gets more than 10c higher than room temp my processor is no longer stable past 3.42, why would i switch to a gtx 260 or a 8800 of any kind, my card is equal to the 260 and more powerful than the 8800 right? im very sure it is.

ahh ok.. missed the heatsink part in your sig, glanced over it real quick and figured it was the case and not the heatsink.

in gaming yes your 5770 is equal to the GTX 260, but in F@H nvidia cards out produce AMD/ATI cards(even though they shouldn't). which is why i was suggesting one of those cards as a secondary card to use in the extra pci-e slot to fold with.

yeah you mentioned the ati folding stuff is fail, i also noticed you have one of my favorite cases the wind tunnel how is it? thanks for the input everyone

other then its impossible to find replacement fans that are true 250mm fans, the lights being annoying as shit, the front temp LED no longer working, and the front cover(the entire cover not the little door) not staying closed after i opened it to put a fan in there that ended up not doing anything, i love the case..

no really, this things a total piece of shit. i really wish i had waited the 2 months for the V2 version that has the top mounted 120mm fan, even though this one has the grill for a 120mm fan theres no way to put one in. the front fans totally useless even when used on a floor with no carpet, there is a tiny vent at the bottom of the front panel. the side fans are total dust collectors. i have to clean this thing out every other week. also the side mounted hard drives are annoying. especially if your psu has very stiff cables its a pain in the ass because the cables will hit the fan blades.

but other then those annoying issues the case does an awesome job cooling my system. cards stay nice and cool overclocked and at full load, cpu stays nice and cool. actually works pretty well for a room heater since very little of the hot air actually stays in the case unlike my antec 300 with its 6 fans it was still 10-15C warmer in the case then outside it. the inside of the wind tunnel case stays at almost room temp.

my preferred case would be the antec 900 with the side panels of the wind tunnel.

well im sad to hear that but the cooling is good, quallity is terrible im happy with mine, its a good case for 32.99 lol but i will upgrade one day im going to save up money and get a case from little devil the pc v10 or v8 he custom makes them awesome cases
