PS3 folding performance disapointing.

I got a PS3 and I must say the amount of points you get out of it is a disapointment. I figured that between the graphics chip and the Cell there would be some good performance there. I didn't buy it to fold so it isn't like a wash or anything.

Back when SMP was first out and you had to drop over $300 to get a bare bones duel core folder up, the PS3 (that got about ~50 to 75% of same ppd) it was worth it. Since then, CPUs have tripled the # of cores, added HT and speed. The PS3 has stayed the same.

This was also when 20k ppd put ya in not the top 20, but top 10.

I will probibly keep it folding until I can afford to put down some cash on some upgrades for my PC and HTPC. Which are both folding curretly, but being a C2D and a C2Q their hayday has long been over as well.

I would be happy just to break the 500th place on this team.

Yeah, the amount of heat and power it sucks up is not worth the roughly 900PPD.
I had mine on for about a week before figuring that out. :)

As I understand it, the PS3s are actually powerful folders, but the production was set to the relatively low 900 PPD so that PS3s wouldn't blow all other hardware (at the time) out of the water. PS3s have their own WUs, I believe, so the PPD is easily controlled by PG. In other words, PG didn't want everyone to stop folding on computers and build PS3 farms. As the point system has evolved, that's no longer an issue.

If so, it's about time to unleash its full potential. Unlock that shit for us and it's off to the races!

I think the point was that the hardware in the PS3 provides a high level of computing power to the F@H project, its just that the way the WU's were valued it doesn't show up much in points. Its up to you to decide if it is worth it to run the PS3 or not.

if thats the case, then they should re-adjust the point values. with the amount of points that a mid-range GPU puts out, having them artificially de-valued seems unfair to those who spend just as much money on the electricity. Not that I particularly care, consoles are for those who can't game on PC ;)

...because their PCs are busy folding. ;) (Gaming on my PS3 right now.)

I wouldn't hold you breath for a point readjustment.

Lol, I have it the other way right now.
PS3 folding away and just got through with a game on my PC :p

As far as it being worth it or not, the biggest thing the PS3 has for me is that it just sits there. So I've put it to use with some folding.
Same with my laptop now, might as well put it to work too :)
