PS3 Distributed computing

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but what I am asking is related to distributed computing.

Anyway, I was thinking about the PS3 and how it is going to have some version of Linux installed on it. Those 7 cores that the cell processor has would probably be good for distributed rendering for 3ds max/maya/any other program that has distributed rendering.

My question is this: Do you think that it will be possible to use the PS3 as a component in a 3ds max render farm?

First off, Cell has 1 scalar core, and 8 simple RISC vector 'co-processors' that are very similar to pixel shader pipelines that any video card has. To say that it has 9 cores would be politically incorrect. Secondly, given that they're not standard processors and do not run scalar x86 code, any rendering application would have to be specially coded to utilize them. It's not a plug-n-play solution and I doubt you will see many games for the first good while that properly use the computing power afforded by Cell. Because Cell only has 1 scalar core, it will actually be slower at certain tasks then a standard duel-core CPU.

Anyways, its 6am here, just my two cents!

Yes, I think it will be possible, but that it may be years before we see it. No doubt this console will be hacked as have all previous consoles. A better questions would be 'does it make sense to use it in a render farm'.

Tom's Hardware has an excellent article about a 8 xbox linux render farm they created that you may enjoy reading if you haven't already.

The question is does it really need to be hacked? I'm not up on the latest information about the PS3, but I thought that Sony wanted to open it up so people could program games and applications for it. I looked around a couple a months ago and I found a lot of information on how to program for the PS3 and the achitecture of the cpu, forums etc. I think if someone has the will and the knowledge they could program something for the PS3.
