PS group test

Shhhhhhhh......don't say that too loud. The Ultra crowd will be back with "well mine didn't blow up and I have x,y, and z for a system......so they got an engineering sample"

thanks for the linkage Im devouring it :p

thats a real test station
not exactly what Intel uses to certify supplies (CHROMA) but pretty much the same difference, just different manufacturers

The Enermax supplies are swimming along near the top of the efficiency food chain through 75% load, and past that they just shut down?

That is just too weird to mention and then leave unexplained! I made a phone call and spoke with Carol Chen of Coolergiant/Enermax USA this morning, never spoke to her (or the company) before in my life, but she seemed very interested and was forwarding the info to Taiwan. We will see what sort of reply comes out of it.

And yes, I have a biased toward Enermax, and while it is certainly not to the exclusion of all other PSUs, it is what makes me so inquisitive. While I’m certainly not ready to rule out the conclusions, I would like a bit more point, counter-point.

On a side note, I am not casting dispersions, and give them props for mentioning it up front; but you know someone is going to question a Tagan being pick #1 with the subjective inclusion “reasonable price considering what you get for your money”, while at the same time the tests were being performed in Tagan’s design house with the assistance of their engineer.

Peace
James

On the Enermax, they mention "a spare four pin Molex connector, (labelled extra), bunched up with the 12V and AUX connector, which we presume is for some older motherboards", and they list it as not having a dedicated molex for graphic cards.

Enermax's connection guide (from their US site) describes the connector labeled "extra" being for stable current to the graphics card.

A minor point, I guess, but don't they get a manual or documentation with the power supplies?

edit: I admittedly don't understand much about the testing methodology, but could the ultra-x being the only one without pfc (and being tested in Europe) have anything to do with it blowing up?

That article confirms some of what I feared about my recently purchased enermax and coolergiant PSUs: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=873297 and adds some new reasons to hate them, I mean dropping dead under (within spec) stress? what's the point of that?

After that, I'm liking the look of the Tagan and Fortron PSUs.

Well I still haven't heard anything concrete from Coolergiant/Enermax. The last reply I got does leave room for speculation and also brings up a point that I wasn't aware of. Here is what Carol Chen sent me on February 25th.

------------
Hi James,
Thanks for checking me back on this issue.
I heard that Enermax headquarter is working on something with our sister company, MaxPoint, in Germany. Maxpoint might make some public statement or talk to the TrustReivew. It's been taking more time than expected previously.
CeBit show in German is coming up on 03/10/05, i'm assuming that's a good timing....

Regards,
Carol
------------

First off something I didn't realize, when I read the review I noted that it was performed at Maxpoint's facilities in Germany, but I didn't connect this to the same Maxpoint name that Enermax sells products under in some parts of the world (do a google:Maxpoint/Enermax).

The reply to this point leaves a lot of questions. Maxpoint might make a statement, or talk to the people at Trusted Reviews; are we to assume from this that they believe the folks at Trusted Reviews misinterpreted the data produced by the Maxpoint's test equipment/engineer? I haven't pressed it further at this time because I don't want to wear out my welcome with Carol Chen, but in the end I am not going to just let this drop. If you own Enermax products and have invested goodwill in recommending them to others, then I urge you to contact Carol Chen at Coolergiant/Enermax USA or the parent company in Taiwan and request a response to the results of this review.

Peace
James
