I'm thinking about buying a projector and I don't want the bulb to die on me in 3 months and have to spend several hundred dollars on a new one. Any idea how long those things last?

It depends on the model. Anywhere from 500 to 4000 hours depending on the projector and what mode you run it in. They typically sell for between $100 and $300 again. depending on the model.

The projector - the bulb you buy depends heavily on the model you're using it in. It's actually kind of complicated when you take into account high lamp mode, economy mode, different projectors, different bulbs, etc... I guess a good generalization would be to say around 1500-2000 hours, but like I mentioned above it can vary widely. You might want to check out avsforum under "Digital Projectors" and read some of the threads there to get an idea of which projectors/settings get you the most bang for your buck. Keep in mind most people use projectors as secondary displays for movies games so 2000 hours can be a few years.
