Thanks for checking out this worklog.

My last PC was a typical mATX housed in a Lian-Li PC-A17b case. It has plenty of room for everything and good airflow. So, I will be reusing that case for this build.

Here is the PC I am upgrading:

The PC will be used for gaming and general use.

I bought the following components for the upgrade:

  • Intel DP45SG
  • 4GB (2GBx2) Crucial DDR3-1333 Dual Channel Kit
  • Diamond 4870 with the ZeroTherm cooler
  • Noctua NH-U9B with a 92mm Low Speed Panaflow fan
  • AS5 thermal compound
  • 2 120mm Low Speed Panaflow fans
  • 3x5.25" LC-343B Fan Module

I will be reusing the following components:

  • Lian-Li PC-A17b
  • 700W Seasonic Modular Power Supply
  • Xeon X3350 Quad Core
  • 2 WD Raptor 150GB HDD
  • LG DVD/Blu-Ray/HD-DVD Reader and DVD Writer

Nice components. looking forward to some pictures
How much was the Intel DG45SG and the 4870 ?

The case had to be modified for the LC-343B Fan Module to fit flush with the front of the case. I used a small round file to extend the bottom 3 drive bay screw holes (see the following picture for illustration purposes) forward enough for the Fan Module to fit.

Here is the case with all of components I am upgrading removed, the screw holes have been extended and the Fan Module installed:

Now, I am ready to start installing all of remaining the components. The 3.5" HDDs will need to be moved to another set of 5.25" drive bays.

I started installing the components and here is a pic of the new motherboard, processor, memory and components I did not remove for the upgrade:

Then installed the video card and all the other bits. I placed the 3.5" HDDs (using 3.5" to 5.25" adapters) in the second and third drive bays from the top as you can see in the next picture. This allows me in the future to install another LC-343B Fan Module in the middle three drive bays if I need the extra cooling. In addition, I replaced the Lian-Li rear exhaust fan with one of the Panaflo fan. The other Panaflow fan is used as an intake fan in the LC-343B Fan Module.

The the PC is completed (minus the one of the side panels):
