looks like the illusions of perspective got the best of ya, lol

its a standard microsoft optical mouse
Compared to the Logitech mice I use it's still big ^_-

u have to mod a keyboard dude!! this thing is coming out really well.

i plan on making a keyboard too
the only problem.... i am running out of pink!

and im afraid if i mix another batch, it won't exactley match.
so im thinking the new keyboard will be mostly black

more updates coming soon. im still working on that switch panel. i messed up the paint job horribly (and the bondo is kinda odd looking now, changed the shape of the surface and didnt turn out like i thought it would). but its coming together.

i also need to know what kind of glue to use to ahear the acrylic window the case. i posted a while back asking, but the guy showed me something i've yet to find anywhere :-(. so im trying to find alternatives

lookin good dude...hey i hope your keeping this all secret from her so it will be a suprise

Your project is coming along great! Maybe you should look into getting a website going for your project.

It's easy to find free hosting.

yay! my VFD finally came in the mail today!

althrough i wont be able to hook it up yet (motherboard still not here, stupid trains), i will take some pics of it and the switch bay (finished) tonight!

next: slot loading dvd burner
custom keyboard
case window
wires + lights
psu mod (with lights and sleeving)

thanks to everyone for the support and motivation. i can't wait to see the look on the face of my girlfriend when i give this to her >.<

my day job as a computer tech isnt limited to computer repair
i also do web sites and stuff

in fact all of these pictures are hosted on one of my web servers
if i find time, i plan on building a site for the project, and maybe for future projects (based on the reaction i've gotten, i think i would do a pretty good job on more stuff in the future).

Look'n great--congrats on your first mod project adventure --keep it up and enjoy the trip!--

ok i lied, usps decided to ship one a wee bit late but its here!
the motherboard came, yay!

So can you set the text on the VFD to a column view as opposed to a row view, since the display will be "sideways"?

actually im having second thoughts

the case was sort of designed from the ground up with the idea that it would be side ways in mind, but setting in a desktop style works as well (and then allows you tread the VFD lol)

but i've thought of like mounting it in the side of the case (like in the same side as the window)

im thinking she's most likely going to set the case in different ways (flat or side) depending on the situation, because its going to be hoooked up in several different places at different times (her house is crazy!). so i've made it so she can hook it up next to the computer in the kitchen, hook it up to the tv, or hook it up in her room. and i imagine she'll set it differet ways in those situations. so i think i just need tos tick to my decision to add the VFD in the drive bay, with no modifications to the software or case. just... can't read it when its on its side.

when its laying flat, the window still shows, so im not worryed about that too much, its just that the window design is... sideways at that point.

its a small conflicting design factor im hoping she'll overlook >.<

besides, with a slot loading dvd burner, you can't go wrong, haha.

In my opinion the window is great as is.

You cut out a pretty complex design and I don’t think any etching would help it out.

Yeah, excellent work on the window cutting!

somehow one of my posts got deleted

i try and repost when i get home today

Awesome mod man. Great job with the Dremel, especially for a first timer. The texture also helps hide some of the imperfections. I like to use the Rustoleum Textured black - it ends up looking like flat black sandpaper when dry and hides lots of flaws. Better than my first, but back then there wasn't a case mod scene and almost nobody else had done anything, so I was making it up as I went along. To attach windows I've used silicone sealant (plain old clear) and Plumber's Goop (or other types of "Goop", they're all the same thing) with good results in the past. The silicone takes longer to dry, but seems to go on thinner and smoother than the Goop. Plus the longer drying time gives you a chance to clean up some of the silicone excess before it dries. Wal Mart should have both.

the work log from last night that was deleted somehow (or maybe never even posted)

hey! thanks for the compliments and advice!

yeah i am extremely happy with how it turned out. i can't wait to see this sucker running

ordered power supply, lights, sleeving, and uv molex connectors, and stuff last night
so more updates coming as soon as all that stuff arrives!

supplies supplies supplies!

stuff came today, horray
however, i am dissapointed with the items, in the flesh...

DSCN4248.jpg

super bright red power LED
pink cold cathode w/ twirling light effect
pci slot cable extender
psu sleeving kit (uv red)
uv red molex connectors

DSCN4249.jpg

very first thing i looked at... mounting the cold cathode
looks like its too tall

DSCN4250.jpg

:-( although i could sand off the part of the plastic, the only place it would fit in the case is in the front (due to the psu in the back). and in this case, i doubt it will do much lighting being under the drive bay frame, plus i still have a slot loading dvd burner to fit in here somewhere, along with a serial ATA hard drive.

and the light wont fit width ways either
DSCN4251.jpg

so... back to ordering more lights *sigh* i was afraid of this

plus, the uv red sleeving looks like "dangerous orange" or something... without uv on it... so im not sure if im gonna stuck with it. i do like the color of the uv molex connectors though. i think i am going to just order a red sleeving kit

You can completely remove those end caps on the CCFL--if they are glued, use a few drops of laquer thinner to soften the weld and then pull it off. On the end with the wire lead, carefully open it (dremel cut-off disk works) to free the wires and then take the cap end off.

Keep the CCFL inside the acrylic tube for protection and simply put heatshrink to reseal both ends again. Looking great so far, keep it up!! ;)

blah

this just has not been my week

got the psu... and it doesnt freagin fit...

does anyone know the power supply that fits this case? *sigh*

well that could have helped if i had done some research first

turns out the only psu's that will fit in a gateway essential are SFX power supplies (whatever the hell that is haha). so i found a compatible one and ordered it.

anybody want to buy a micro atx power supply? :-(

yes, the switch panel (construction at least) is finished!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

here are the groovy pictures

i do apologize for the lack of updates...

things have gotten busy at work, and outside of work as well

but on the upside, the CORRECT power supply came in a few days ago, and it fits perfectly! will be sleeving it, and changing the connectors

i'll post pics as soon as thats done (most likely this weekend)

stay tuned! ^_^

ok so basically the reason why i haven't been posting anything is because...

well there's nothing to post

i ran out of money for the project (and gained world of warcraft)

haha... classic story right?
anyways, the project will finished soon tho! i only have a few things left to buy.

i will update as soon as i get them. it should be before the beginning of october.

until then, thanks to everyone that took the time to see my creation
and thanks for the compliments!

Very cool. I enjoyed going through the six pages of posts, and seeing your progress. It sucks when you run out of funds temporarily, but it looks like it's coming along very nicely. I look foward to seeing how it ends up!

I was about to say very nice work for your first mod, then you had to go and ruin it by mentioning WoW. Yet another victim to the monster known as the MMO industry.

Either way, nice mod...hopefully she enjoys it and realises how much time has been put into it (when she sees it that is).
