I hope it works out but I'm skeptical. There are reports of 2619 is crashing at 100% without enough RAM here, at OC, and Folding Forum.




 
With 4Gb 800mhz DDR2 going for 32.99 with MIR its hard to justify not going with the 2x2Gb config. It just offers us the most protection to these larger WU's. I've not had one issue yet, my lowest machines have 2Gb, 3 machines have 4 GB.

The only side effect is you will get alot of those crappy WU's that are out of wack points wise... but shrug... what does it matter considering its for a great cause!

Only if you have the 64-bit version of XP. The standard 32-bit version of XP will address up to approximately 3.5GB of memory, which is still much more than your current 2GB. You should be fine upgrading the memory without needing to reinstall the OS and all of your apps. I have 4GB of RAM on my main system with Win XP-32 running two SMP clients.

Me too, I have 2 VM, 4 Gb and Vista 32 bits without problems. However, I'm not feeling comfortable with the new 2619 WU eating a lot of memory so I have to get the 64 bits version but it's not mandatory (I got a OEM license for cheap so no issue for me) ;)

For now, I'm avoiding Vista and VMs for my main system. I believe two SMP clients with 4GB of RAM and XP-32 should be good for a long time even with a bunch of other applications running concurrently. Unless Stanford releases WUs that eat more than 1GB of memory each, LOL (hope not).

PS. If you can get me a good deal on any OEM OS, PM me.

You need to be registered as a System Builder and order thru the distributor to get a good deal. I had a contact with a local distributor we deal often at work ;) I paid 105$ + shipping for Vista HP 64 bits OEM.

You can go cheaper. Vista Home Premium 64 bit OEM DVD from Newegg is $99 Free Shipping. I think I heard someplace that Microsoft is also dropping the price a little more over the next few months. Still, Ubuntu 7.10 is cheaper yet. $0.00 :D

NCIX also have a special for 99$ for Vista HP 32 bits and 105$ for 64 bits. My local distributor (which is the middle-men with TechData, a big canadian distributor) sell them for 102$ each licence so it's about the bottom you can go in Canada.
