I want to connect my electric piano to my laptop and get the sound recorded on the laptop.
What programs would i need?

You could use the basic sound recorder that comes with Windows. You could also use Audacity if you want to be able to record and edit the tracks.

yea i want to record and edit. is there a special version of audacity that i need? or a specific setting?

Yea, Audacity will do everything you want. Just go and download it, its pretty self explanatory.

Set an input (your Piano) and record.

A lot of these have MIDI ports. Well -- I would expect these days they all do! I'd get yourself a MIDI sequencer and a USB cable and go that route. Something like Cakewalk studio would probably be perfect. This way you're not loosing any quality -- you'll just be recording the digital sequence and you'll be able to edit it directly with cake walk, too.
