Processor temperature question..

Ok so I turned my case on its side and pushed down on the heat sink. Nothing changed temperature wise. I even, for a 5th time, re did it including artic silver. I followed multiple videos protocol on this. Same temperature.

So I decided to try something different. I installed the stock heat sink that came with the core i7 920. temperatures are now from 32-38degrees and when i run prime 95 hottest it gets is 55-57..

So I guess that means this heat sink is bad right? I am 90% sure I installed it right.

What are the chances of getting decent temps with the stock cooling and OC to 3.3 or 3.4??

Also any other suggestions would be great

I should add that I do intend to upgrade this as fast as possible.

EDIT: When I put my comp back upright with the stock cooling it is now 40-43 degrees. It's still better than the cogage.. I am baffled tbh

Dumb question, but did you check the fan speeds? Is the CPU fan plugged in properly?

Other than that all I can think of is either the thermal paste or its application are bad, or there isn't enough mounting pressure.

Also, make sure when you apply the thermal compound to use a line that goes across all of your cores. I noticed that the guide arctic silver sends out for "Quad Cores" is wrong with respect to the i7's.

This is the correct orientation of your line of compound so that it will 100% cover all of the cores:

I believe the cogage has just a flat copper surface on the bottom right? You should be fine if you put a line of paste like in the photo and then apply the heatsink (some people recommend more fancy stuff if you have exposed heat pipes).
