ok, somone really really needs to make a page where we can submit logs and cpu type/speed to see if we can figure out really how much bang/$ each type of CPU gives...

there was a thread about this but i think it got purged...

anyone want to voulenteer?

Larry used to have a page like that but I'm not sure if it's updated or not. Check his site, it might still be up.

Well, I have webspace and the freetime to kill.
I also have a gmail account so accepting massive amounts of submissions is not hard.

I fully agree someone needs to do this. If anyone else wants to "endorse" me in doing this, that's fine. I really don't care.

For now, PM me with your log files.

If that doesn't work, I'll post my gmail address.

u just want us to copy our log files ans pm them to u? or is there more to it? ill have to go all over town to get this info but if u guys are into it, ill make that trip :)

I think what you want is.....

CPU type. Intel/ AMD etc, etc.
Ghz.
FSB. See if it just Ghz or does FSB make a difference.
Flags/ Boost. See if SSE is running or not.
Protien Number.
Type. Tinker/ Gromac/ DGromac.
Points.
Times.

From all that you can then workout Points per Day per Ghz which is one of the important numbers.
The other is cost of buying/ running the box.

Luck............ :D

Yeah, this sounds like a great idea. If anyone could get any info on how fast G5's fold, that would be pretty sweet too! :)

Tigerbiten's definitely has the right idea there for the numbers needed. :D

Is there any reason for Tinkers outstripping Gromacs so badly in terms points, other than
calculation time? I mean a Tinker takes about 4 times the time, but yields more than 4
times the points. (On my machine that is) :p

I believe they restructured the points system recently and since then, tinkers on amd boxes have been getting much better pts/hr

As for a specific reason, I think there wasn't one really. I mean they probably had some reason for their points restructuring, but who knows.

Stanford decided to bring the Tinkers up inline with the Gromacs in terms of points per hour.
That now works on there Intel system.
BUT AMD have always folded Tinkers twice as fast as Intels.
Hence on AMD Tinkers now give more points than Gromacs.

Luck........ :D

As Tigerbiten pointed out ( a few times now ;) ) if you remove the -advmethods switch, it looks more painful, but, you GAIN points. I only have one Intel machine for that reason. ( broke down and went for the hype on the 875 chipset, a moment of weakness  )

is that for amd or intel machines?
If you're asking about removing the -advmethods flag, that's only for AMD's. I'm not sure what the consensus is for PIII's, but for P4's you need to try and get Gromacs to score the best. Either way you'll probably end up getting both, but you'll get more of what you ask for.
