I'm going to play through the Witcher 2 again because of patch 2.0. Problem is the game isn't auto updating and keeps giving me the critical error,

"Game version is invalid or not complete"

Has anyone had this problem? I have the Retail version.

I bought from GOG so not sure if this applies to retail: make sure you have the 1.35 patch then download 2.0. No idea if the auto update works I usually just get it from the website. I went from install > patch 1.1 > 1.2 > 1.3 > 1.35 > 2.0

I remember getting a similar error when I tried to update to the 2.0 straight away - or when applying a different languages version.

It won't even let me update it to 1.1. Keeps coming up with that same error. WTF!

You need to have it updated to a specific version before the autoupdate will work. The instructions were on the page for the 2.0 patch. You actually needed a manual patch before it would autoupdate to 1.1 if I remember correctly as well.

Witcher 2 patching is a bit of a messy honestly. I'd think they'd have released a more cumulative type patch for 2.0, since it is a big update and it was trying to bring in new buyers as well. But they didn't.

I just redownloaded it off GoG, since they had updated to 2.0 for simplicity.

I had the same issue....

Tried patching from 1.35 & it still didn't work (multiple times). I just downloaded the complete copy of it again from GoG.

Well I'm not re purchasing the game just to patch it, that is crazy. There is got be be something I'm missing but I don't know what. I have tried to install the 1.1 international version but its not working.

Complex, but try following this -

Maybe your version is already updated?

Its not, none of the new difficulty settings are present when I start the game and Uninstall programs has it marked version 1.0

I was just on this page and downloaded the International Version & the North American Atari and Affiliates version and they still didn't work.

I mean maybe it is already 1.1? Go to the readme in the game directory, should be the correct version in that.

If all else fails, I guess the reinstall method?

I'm going to re-install it, and if it doesn't work , Im going to pull my hair out.

I don't get why there are so many versions of the game to download. They should just make a 2.0 stand alone patch for christ sake.

Are you trying to patch it with the launcher? Some of the earlier patches tried to patch through the launcher but often failed. I remember one of the earlier patches wanted me to do it through the launcher, but instead I had to close it, locate the file where it got downloaded to and run it manually. If the launcher was open at all, it'd screw up.

The patching situation was a bit of a screw up, I think the main reason it was such a screw up was because the launcher itself was fundamentally broken to start with and the first couple of patches had to fix it.

Good lord. Finally Its patched to 2.0. I wish they would put the version down at the bottom right of the screen or something. Its A. Very confusing on which version your need to download and B. Misleading because the Auto Patcher does not work.

Thanks for the reply's people. You kept me from breaking something. :p

What do you mean by purchasing it again? You didn't buy it from GoG?

I have also read somewhere that you can not have any mods installed during the patching process, so I always remove mine before I patch.

No I purchased the Retail version because I wanted the extras that came with the game. . Its all good now that I know what patches I need.

Ah, that's cool. I often ponder that anymore... do I want the physical extras or just the digital ones. Sometimes the savings through the digital copies outweigh the physical. I'm going to have to make that call when Mass Effect 3 arrives.

Most games these days, unless it is a collector's edition, don't seem to come with anything extra when you buy the physical copy anymore. Some exceptions like the Witcher 2 do bundle collector's edition type content with their regular version though.

Since the game content is increasingly tied to online services, you don't really "own" a physical copy anymore than a digital one either.
