I just finished putting together a system for my brother, but seems to have a problem loading up. It takes a long time for the IDE drives to be detected in the beginning (about 45 secs). When it tries to boot from the WinXP CD, it turns into a black screen after the message "Inspecting hardware configuration." I rechecked all the connections and ram, and I'm not sure where to go from here.

Here's the system:
XP 2500+
Abit NF7-S
Kingston 512MB PC3200
Gigabyte 9600 Pro
WD 80GB SE
Lite-On Combo Drive

Any help is much appreciated.

Make sure jumpers are set right on the drives. If you're using older ide cables make sure they arent backwards.

I have the hard drive and combo drive each set as master on the 1st and 2nd channel respectively. The cables are the ones that came with the board. I also tried putting a spare CD-Rom in there, and it still took a very long time to detect. Could it possibly be the board? I have the same board and I can't even see the POST screen because it's so fast.

If you are just installing windows onto the machine, it will take time to detect all your hardware.

If you are just trying to boot it up and log on normally, make sure in bios you have your hard drive for your FIRST boot device.

Or if you have your motherboard names splash screen on, disable it and it will boot faster.

I've never had a computer take so long to detect the hardware. Even on my old P2 machine, the WinXP CD never took this long to load. It can't get to the part where the CD loads up the files. I've left it on the black screen for 15 minutes with no progress at all.
