problems with i7 2700k overclock

Hi,

I had what i thought was a stable overclock (a few hours in prime95 with no errors) of 4.5 @ 1.296v.....and then tried to play skyrim.

After about 20 mins i got a bsod...but with some perculiar effects.

Straight from the bsod I restarted the pc and it loaded windows 7 fine with no issues, and passed an hour of prime95. i thought that perhaps concurrently stressing the rest of system highlighted instability in my cpu overclock (which is why it could pass prime but crash in skyrim), so thought i'd bump the vcore by 0.005 to see if it would sort it out.

However, apon then next restart (to enter the bios for the voltage bump) i was unable to get into the bios..i pressed delete and it just hung at the opening bios screen. I then restarted and this time couldn't get a signal from my video card. I plugged the monitor into the hdmi output on the motherboardboard, and after a few more restarts eventually got a picture (but only at the windows startup screen) and windows was loading incredibly slowly (clearly struggling)...

i was starting the get worried at the stage, but then after a few more restarts it suddenly fixed itself, giving me video, enabling me to the enter the bios, loading windows fine, and passing an hour of prime95 (with the cpu overclocked).

I'm not sure how to explain this? Could the instable overclock and bsod of just unsettled the pc momentarily despite powering down/restarting? It seems strange that immediatly after it passed an hour of prime, yet then couldn't get into the bios. Does this sound like something else, such as a dodgy motherboard?

You have multiplier set at 45 and Vcore. What are the rest of settings in the bios? Internal PLL and Load Line? Internal PLL should be set to enabled for overclocks 4.5 and higher
 
Load line is at level 2 (this gives no vdroop or vrise)....but i haven't set internal pll overvoltage. As it 'seemed' stable without it I didn't bother, but will set it if its recommended for 4.5+.

As for the rest:
power limit short = 180
power limit long = 140
(this prevents throttling)

PLL voltage = 1.702
spread spectrum disabled

and i believe the rest is at auto (although not at my pc right now).

So you think the results of the bsod can be easily explained by simple instability? And not something else failing in my system?

I hope so.
 
What bsod error codes are you getting?

BSOD Codes for SandyBridge
0x124 = add/remove vcore or QPI/VTT voltage (usually Vcore, once it was QPI/VTT)
0x101 = add more vcore
0x50 = RAM timings/Frequency add DDR3 voltage or add QPI/VTT
0x1E = add more vcore
0x3B = add more vcore
0xD1 = add QPI/VTT voltage
“0x9C = QPI/VTT most likely, but increasing vcore has helped in some instances”
0X109 = add DDR3 voltage
0x0A = add QPI/VTT voltage

I would run at stock to see if there is instability in the system that would rule out OC causing the problem.
 
so far only one bsod, and i didn't catch the code (i downloaded 'bluescreen view', but it reports no crashes....i stupidly may have restarted the pc before the dump was complete).

my plan is to bump the vcore +0.005, enable pll overvoltage, and see if it crashes again. If it does again i'll try it at stock, and refer to that handy list of error codes you made when moving forward.

also, i don't have any of the power saving features disabled (c1e, c3/c6/package state, or thermal throttling), as i quite like these features....but may try disabling them if you think they could have a major impact?
