I bought a Sapphire Radeon x700 Pro for my brother this christmas. Unfortunatly it wasnt working on his system. I tested it on another system and it worked fine.
I removed his Radeon 9600, unistalled all the drivers, rebooted with no drivers installed and the x700 installed. After I install either downloaded Drivers / CDROM Drivers, I am asked to reboot.

This is where it all went wrong. The system boots up and attempts to start windows. But the screen is messed up in colorful dots. finally the log in screen shows up (doesnt look pretty) and the mouse and system hangs.

Presuming this was fault on the card, i tested it on a AMD Athlon XP 1300 MHz. Which has always used onboard graphics. It worked perfectly and I was eager to see what kind of benchmark score it would have on 3dMark03....

Soooo....Anyone know why it messes up after I install the catalyst drivers?

I'm not sure, but if catalyst isn't doin it for you, I'd go get Omega drivers for that card. It'll up your benchies too =D. They work better than the catalyst drivers and don't eat up your memory like nothing

Hurrah! Windows loads!

Unfortunatly, after I set my resolution to 1280 x 1024 some of my icons became invisable. Then after loading up 3dMark, some weird lines appeared on the taskbar. I tried to run a benchmark but the system hangs when the resolution is changed and all the stuff is loaded up.

I might try to overlap the official drivers on top of these ones and see what happens. The omega drivers got me into windows at least.

Oops. Major Oops.

I couldnt get the damn thing working and resorted to flashing the bios. and guess what? It didnt work. I've broke the motherboard now and it isnt starting up into a POST screen and is beeping for england.

So... guess I'll have to shell out for a new motherboard for my brother and sell the x700 for second hand. Really puts a hole in my budget for saving up for an x1800 and 74g Raptor hdd. :( :( :(

Check the manufacturers website. Some motherboards will still allow a flash from floppy if you hold down a certain key while powering up the machine. It will automatically read the bios from disk. I never had to use that feature but it existed on a few motherboards that I have owned.

You may still be able to get that raptor and x1800XT. Dunno why you don't just go for the 1900XT but whatever. :)

Ok, I'll try that tommorow after I get some sleep. Unfortunate that I've already ordered the new motherboard
I've been saving up cash for upgrades for ages and I basically already ordered a x1800 and I'm the type of person that just keeps it rather then taking it back or canceling. I dont think I could justifty getting a x1900 either...so many other bills to pay...lol
If I manage to get the system to work from your recommendation, then its a bonus. Because after much panic today, I thought of a masterplan.

##Masterplan:##
Broke motherboard = excuse to get pci-e for the future. I will have a spare x600 when i install my x1800 in my main comp. This would go in the other comp with new motherboard, until my brother decides to get a x1900 (He will cry if his isnt better)
If the motherboard works, then simply use it till he gets a x1900....there are so many possiblies,,:),

Recently Purchased/ordered:
X1800: £260
X700: £90
G8NE m/b: £60
Logitech G15 Gaming keyboard: £30 (Impulse buy!!! Need a new keyboard eventually and thought i'd save on postage [plus i split some coke on the old keyboard tonight >.<] )
Total: £440

..now..lets hope I get that new job I applied for

I dont know why noone has said it before, what you're describing is clearly artifacting. This is most often a hardware issue, but it can be linked to drivers as well. check your temps, and make sure the card is seated right
