Problems updating ATI Drivers

I'm attempting to help a friend who's attempting to install the latest ATI drivers on a laptop that she purchased used. Any suggestions are greatly appriciated.

Laptop: Sony Vaio
OS: Windows 2K (w/ service pack 4)
Direct X: 9 (diag tool said everything was fine)
Video Card: ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 AGP (LW)
Current Video Driver: 5.13.01.6006.
New Driver (one she's trying to install): 6.14.10.6483.

Problem (her words):
after i run the exe file, it asks me to ok the license agreement and i selected "yes to
all" when it asked about duplicate files.

then it runs the installshield wizard. that's when i get the error message ("severe") INF
error, video driver not found. i click "OK" then get the error message ("severe") Setup
was unable to complete the installation. Try to set up your display adapter with a
standard VGA driver before running setup. I click "OK" and it kicks me out of the installshield wizard.
 
Tell her to boot in safemode and remove the old ATI drivers first. Then install the new ATI drivers. Also is the OS up to date?
 
Maybe there's a driver you can download from the manufacturers site. I had the impression that laptops tend to be more proprietary and manufacturers need to create their own drivers based on the official ones to get it to work. So it might be possible that the hardware ID doesn't match the driver.

Just my thoughts. :)
 
You need to modify something in the drivers so you can install them on laptops.. I used to have a program that would change whatever needed to be changed, but cant seem to find it anymore..

Omega drivers work out of the box with laptops so you can use those for now.
