Problems installing card on a Dell

yes, I know any upgrades to a Dell are going to be a problem, but this sucks. My roomate and I were pitting a ATI Radeon 9200 in his dell today. This is going in a PCI slot because it is a Dell and has no AGP slot. So....this thing is going from a onboard video card/driver to the ATI. After hours on messing with it and 2 other computer "wizes" looking at it it hasnt installed proberly. We disabled the onboard video card throught the bios, no difference. It still read the ATI as a secondary card. We tried makeing it the primary card through Control Pannel and that didn't work. All I can say is HELP!!!! Please, if any of you know how to make this work please let me in on it.

go into device manager, and click the + next to video card, uninstall the secondary driver, it worked for me on my 9200SE

You don't really give any specifics about your situation, but you could check in the BIOS for an Init first display setting and set it to PCI, chances are it is initilizing the AGP onboard card first.

As much as I would like to give the most intimant of details, there really isn't much to say. We are trying to take my roomates crappy Dell and make it function like a computer. As I have said in my first post we are trying to switch the computer from useing a video card that is buils into the mother board to one that is going into a PCI slot. The computer has said that the device is not compatable with the coponants in the computer, but people around here have said that once you disable the onboard video card the ATI will come to like. As of now the monitor is running off of the ATI but none of the ATI drivers are comming up when we go to check the desplay settings. We have tried what was suggested and nothing has worked at the moment. I hope that this was somewhat helpful. If you guys need to know anything else just ask.
Thankyou again,
--Steve

Something like this happened when i tired to install a 9600xt in an emachines. It was agp obivously, but the problem was mosly the same. The card was working, but even after the drivers were installed, games wouldn't work, and the control panel wouldn't load. I fixed it by switching the computer to Standard PC in the device manager. If you do this bewarned you may have to reinstall some drivers and the "it is safe to turn off your computer" screen will show up.

Well, we fixed it. We formatted the hard drive with a Windows XP Home cd and everything works. The ATI started to work on the first try. You would be amazed of how much faster that sucker runs now, just without all of the dell setup crap on it. This iss just one more reason to give Dell the middle finger. I'll apoligize for you Dell fans, no hard feelings.
