I have a 200gig western digital (8mb cache) as a storage drive. it's probably about half full. i'm getting some problems when i try to download large files to it they just stop downloading.

I thought i would try and defrag it to see of that would help but when i try to defrag i get this message:

"Defragmentation of (X:) has been aborted due to inconsistencies that were detected in the filesyetem. Please run CHKDSK or SCANDISK on (X:) to repair these inconsistencies, then run disk defragmenter again."

I can defrag my main HD no problem. I've run scandisk and chkdsk in windows and before windows xp starts and i still get the same message. Is there a way to fix this or will i have to format the drive?
 
I don't know if you did this already, cause it isn'n in your post but, run scandisk on that drive with both check boxes checked. atomatically fix errors, and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or something like that. Might take a while. Hope it helps
 
thanks yeah i did try that, i also tried western digitals Data Lifeguard Diagnostic Tool and it said if found bad sectors and an error was detected while repairing bad sectors. so i think i might have to either re partition it or RMA it it a pain in the ass because i'll have to backup 100gig of stuff either way

Sounds like an RMA to me. Get your data backed up ASAP get that thing replaced. You really shouldn't be complaining about backing up 100GB of data because surely you already have some sort of backup method in place, right? :)

no that would be way too sensible, i have about 20 gig on my main drive and a removable 20 gig i could store stuff on i'll just need to delete what i dont need and copy over the rest to dvd's :(
 
start > run > cmd
CHKDSK /F X:

where X: is your drive letter..

It will likely ask if you want to schedule a repair, tell it yes and reboot.

Just a filesystem error, no RMA needed.. :)
