Problem with PSU Burning Out

Well the title basically says it all. I have this other computer that I've needed to change the PSU about 3 times already. It has these sort of power hangs. It won't turn on now, and that little green light on the mobo is'nt on either, so I don't know what the hell keeps burning these PSU's. Before it turned off, I was having a problem booting it up because I kept getting the blue screen (of death), and I could'nt get it past the login without problems.

I don't know if this is a software issue that's causing the problem, or it's maybe a hardware thing that keeps causing the problem. Maybe the mobo is causing a short to the PSU, I don't really know. If you guys can maybe give any information to help that would be great. Because if it's software then I'll just go ahead and replace the PSU, and reformat the computer, if it's a hardware problem then that's a different story.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance. :)

Software or Hardware... I would say neither.

Do you have the power cord plugged into a UPS, or wall outlet? if UPS, does it have a voltage regulator or line conditioner? How old is the UPS?

If you have it plugged directly into the wall, you're probably not getting clean power to the power supply, causing it to work harder to provide decent voltage and amperage to your PC. Also, if there are any surges on the lines, your P/S is going to take the hit first.

If you have it plugged into a UPS, and the batteries no longer hold a charge, its pretty much the same as having it plugged into the wall, except you still have surge protection... but that doesn't help against brownout.

Voltage Regulator and Line Conditioner are interchangable terms for the same thing. A UPS with this provides stable, clean power to whatever is plugged into the battery ports, at the proper voltage so that the electronics don't have to suffer from low or fluctuating voltage.

It's plugged into an old surge protector, I think I might just go ahead, and buy a UPS and Power Supply.

The computer hardly gets turned off, so it could be that there was maybe some electrical noise throughout the day causing it to burn-out, but then again this is my 3rd PSU in less than one year. You think the power problem was also the reason as to why I was getting the blue screen, and long freezes not allowing me to log on before it finally went?

^The last PSU I took off an eMachines, lol. It's a small comp with a 2.4, on-board everything. I just have it for the family to use, my actual computer is a whole different story.

If you want to rule out the power supply, but a PC Power & Cooling.

2x the price of any other one but will last you 5+ years and will NOT burn out easily

^I would'nt wan't to spend that kind of money on that computer. I mean if it takes the PSU, and a UPS then I can go ahead, and do that.
