Hey all.

I am using the FAH virtual machine for the -bigadv work units (and am using VMware Player 3). It worked just fine for a while (although it was not actually using -bigadv work units.

I just now started trying to use them, however I am now getting an error. Here are the final lines which occured just after a work unit finished and I started the client up with the arguments shown:

And there it's sat for a while now. I'm not sure what's goin on. I'd appreciate some input. Thanks!

Yeah I checked that out, permissions were fine. I decided to go ahead and just delete thtat VM and start over. The good news is I noticed I just got my first bigadv work unit about an hour and a half ago, so hopefully my PPD ramps up! I may need to work on increasing my overclock (it seems like it'll take roughly 50 hours to finish this... is that too long?)

i think that the cutoff for bonus points is 2.7 days so you should be ok. unfortunately i cant see your error msg on my phone :(
i'm sure that with all of us that are running bigadv now that one if us will be able to help :)

This is yet another indication that Stanford needs to release the SMP2 client ASAP. I received many errors like this one with standard SMP WUs. What happened in my case was a hang right after the WU completed, but it refused to upload results. This only happened to my clients when I used the -smp x flag. It never occurred without the numerical value added to the -smp flag.

Now, if you stop the client and restart it, you will lose the completed WU and receive the Project: 0 (Run 0, Clone 0, Gen 0) error, at which point your client will just stop functioning. Only way to get it working again is to delete the WU. However, if your client is hanging when attempting to upload upon completing a WU, you can wait a couple of hours and it will eventually upload (I found this out by waiting).

If this isn't the problem you're having, then ignore my post. Alternatively, look here for additional info: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1470686

How much ram are you giving your VM? I had the same errors until I gave my VM enough ram. I don't remember what the number was when I stopped seeing the error but I have mine using 5GB now.

Yeah I gave it 5GB. Like I said I decided to scrap that VM and just make a new one. I'm on vacation away from home right now but I left it running, it was goin along just fine when I left so we'll see where it's at when I get back. The work unit may not even be done by that time since I'll be back early Sunday.

I appreciate the insight into the problem, though. I hope it doesn't act up again. I'd hate to lose potentially 50K points... lol.

OOC, was this problematic VM created with another version of VMware software and then migrated to Player 3.0?

I don't reckon so. I downloaded it from the guide that was talking about how to set it up so I'd assume it was for VMware Player 3.0.

When I set it back up it was the same exact image (just extraced the ZIP again to another location).

Well I'm still not done with the bigadv work unit. Evidently it should be done in 8 hours but according to fahmon, the preferred deadline is in 1 day 12 hours (downloaded 2 days 11 hours ago). It also says the credit is 25,403 points, which is a little confusing since I thought they were 50,000 points (give or take) if they're done on time.

I guess I'll have to increase my overclock. I didn't want to go too far but with it cooling down anyway it may be a lot easier to accomplish now.

Fahmon won't report your -bigadv bonus--it just shows the base points, which is the 25403 number you quoted.

I gotcha. Thanks. But would the deadlines be accurate? If so I'll make the preferred deadline by a long shot but doing the calculations that'd be over 3 days which isn't what I saw elsewhere.

Well that's encouraging. According to that, I'll be getting roughly 18073 PPD if I am entering the correct information (from one percent to the next right?).

If you make it within ~2.7 days or less, you should be eligible for the bonus points.

Maybe that's the combined total, ie., base points (25,403)+bonus, but the value of the bonus points varies depending on the time of completion. It's always going to vary between different systems.

When I plugged it in to that calculator it said I'll get 51804 points but also said 2.89 days. Is that a glitch?

I have noticed that in the calculator as well. I can't verify if it's an error or not. However, reading in the threads at the Folding Forum, the deadline seems to be around 2.7 days. So, one of them is definitely incorrect unless Stanford changed the bonus deadline.

51k sound about right for a 2.89 day fold.
I've got a big VM which does a frame at ~32 mins for ~58k. ~2.25 days
The other big VM folds a frame at ~43 mins for ~50k. ~3 days

I think the bonus cut off is at the preffered deadline of 4 days.
But as it can take upto 2 hours to shut the client down and upload the results, you dont want to get to close to this time.
Hence people saying 3 days for a work-unit.
So anything under ~50 mins per frame should be fine.

Luck ........... :D

OK, it would make sense if the client took that long to shut down. Wow, that's really nuts and I thought standard SMP WUs took long between WUs!

Thank you tiger. Awesome news! Looks like I"ll be hitting 2 million in very little time indeed... lol.

I just finished my first bigadv . Total time was 68 hours and it finished uploading about 20 min ago. So I'll know here in a bit how that turns out points wise. :)

Thanks Heretic! I'll be finishing my work unit sometime early tomorrow morning, so it may be uploaded by the time I am up. It'd be nice to see how that goes.

How do you figure out exactly how many just 1 WU gets if your puttin up multiple WUs?

Just so happened that was the only work unit I put up that update (guess my GPU client got a particularly large WU.
