Problem with disabling onboard graphics

Hello everyone! I was directed to this site by a friend who says it's a great place to get help, which I need because I'm a bit stumped trying to get my new laptop to use the GeForce GT 640 it has instead of the integrated graphics. I've gone into the Nvidia settings and set the global settings to always use the Nvidia card, and verified that the drivers are up to date, but that doesn't seem to help.

So I thought I'd just disable the integrated graphics in the control panel, but when I do that, I can't even open the Nvidia control panel anymore, because it says my display is not connected to an Nvidia GPU, which strikes me as weird since I only disabled the Intel HD Graphics 4000 adapter.

Then I figured I may as well just disable it through BIOS, but on this laptop I don't see any options, under any of the menus, where I can do this. So now I'm really stuck, but I also don't know nearly as much about PCs as a lot of people, so I'm hoping someone here can help me figure this out.

It's a Samsung Series 7 Chronos, Core i7 2.4Ghz, 8GB RAM, GeForce GT 640M 1GB running Windows 8.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :)
 
Re-enable the integrated HD Graphics 4000 and the nVidia control panel should re-appear.

Next, open the nVidia control panel, select Manage 3D Settings. Directly above the Global Settings Tab there should be a drop-down menu which will allow you to choose which graphics adapter to use for 3D. Select the nVidia GT 640M, click the Save button in the lower, right-hand corner and you should be good to go.

That was the first thing I tried, as I mentioned in my original post.
 
I know that was the first thing you tried since I read your post thoroughly prior to making my post. I've personally experienced setting preferred graphics adapters yet the settings didn't stick the first time but did the second time. :)

Another setting that may be causing you not to be able to use the 640M is power management profile. If your power management profile is set to max power savings that could possibly cause the system to use integrated graphics. Set power management to mid-range or even off to see if this corrects the issue. Also, ensure you have the power adapter plugged-in at all times during the times you are gaming.
