I live in a 2 bedroom house, with a roommate.. so its in direct view of peoples eyes when they walk in. So u know what they ask. I got tired of all the dumb@$$e$, installing stuff, so i created a guest account that limits what they can do. I would say its broken, but u could imagine what they say when i jump on it and it works....

What i would like to do is to pretty much block the web, (mainly yahoo messenger, gayol im), and not block Folding on the guest account.

Computer setup. RR Cable modem to a 4 port linksy's cable/dsl router, 3 comps connected to the router.

Thanks for the help.

hmm.. thats probably the best solution. hate to do it because i use those programs under my account. argg... hmmm.

Software firewall which can block programs but allow Folding@Home? Sygate or something?

You could leave port 80 open, and block 5190 (aol msgr), 6901 (msn messenger) and others from this list. Should be fairly trivial with any firewall.

Or... just block it all... and then once you log back in F@H will upload/download....

just as long as it is set up as a client

Run the console and install it as a service. The service should run under any type of account (assuming we're talking about Win 2k/XP here).
Then you can setup a guest account with 0 privlidges.
Local Group Policy is your friend.....

Then you don't have to worry about them installing anything or changing your settings as they have rights to NOTHING. They can browse the web but that's it.... can't even install a plugin.
The ONLY thing you'd have to worry about (minor annoyance) would be a browser homepage script that changes the guest accounts homepage to some spammer script.... but it's easily fixed by changing it back.
No port blocking necessary.

Hide or remove the big blue E. Firefox default browser, block any site, or group of sites. Parental control stuff. 0 Admin priveleges, through group policy editor is nice too. The ZoneAlarm route is too obvious, and easily reversed.

thanks...

good site with info about group polocy?

Would love to set up a server and then have everybody log onto it, like they do at work. i do have enough parts to setup about 7 comps, but with the price of ms software, F-Jackie.

Might I suggest free Linux distros, such as our own mage's fold server? :)
