Problem with a brand new build

Ok so the case came for the system I'm building for my mom today while I was at schoo;

Aspire ATXB2KL w/ 350w PSU
Athlon XP 2700+
Shuttle An35n-Ultra
512mb( 1x 256mb Kingston ValueRAM, 1x 256mb Corsair Value Select ) PC2100
Radeon 7000 64mb
Lite-On 16x CD-RW
Quantum Fireball 30gb

after I'd gotten all the hardware installed ( this being my first ground up build ) I turned it on everything started spinning up after going in the bios and changing the cd drive to the first boot item I get this error

PXE-E61: media test failure check cable
then something about exiting nvidia
disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter

ok I check all cables reboot same thing. I think google that error and I get some things about disableing LAN so I do that and I'm no longer getting the pxe error but I'm still getting the "disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter" error.

Ok so I take the hdd out and put it in my system and run scandisc everythings fine. so I put it back in the other system and same thing so I'm wonder what could be wrong could it be my XP cd ( it is a burned backup I can't find my original one and the one I ordered came broken so newegg has to send me a new one but it hasn't shipped out yet ) otherwise I have no clue what it could be


any help would be very much appreiciated
 
make sure it's detecting the CDROM correctly. PXE boot is usually the last boot item, so boot fails after that option.
 
ya it's detecting the cdrw and the hdd fine

ok I have the floppy set to the last boot item and right now I don't have a floppy drive installed. would that be causing it.

no sarcasm there, just happiness that this one wasn't like one of the last few... total n00b methinks, a fellow who took an awful long time to realize that the fact that his raid array wasn't working might actually be connected with the fact that he never installed any sata drivers.

i was not the happiest fellow around when he finally posted (after at least an hour of guess and check) "oh wait i just realized i forgot to install the sata drivers. do you think this might have anything to do with it?" there are very few times indeed when i wish that i could post my fist into another member's nose, but that was certainly one of them. what a joke.
 
ya ok I understand it's been a long night here too,

anyway So I took floppy off the boot list so nows it's
cd-rom
hdd-0
[disabled]

still get the disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter error

guess I'll have to go bum a floppy drive off my cs teacher in the morning
 
no all the ide cables are firmly seated, jumpers set to master molex connected correctly and firmly
 
what's the jumper on the cd-rom drive? is it on the same cable as the hdd was?
 
hmm... try setting it as slave, on the same cable as the hdd... just a hunch.
 
Do you have a different CD that has an autorun/installer feature on it? Like a linux install disk, or something that is bootable? This sounds like a problem with either the CD drive or the CD. Try another bootable cd and see if you get it to boot to that.
When the system is starting, do you get the "Boot from atapi cd-rom" (or whatever) message?

darkstar: no I only have my backup copy of winxp pro which i'm trying to use

whe it gets past the post it says Boot from CD: then a second or two later it comes up with the disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter error. The drive worked a day ago when I took it out of my system to replace it with my new NEC-3500A dvd±rw drive. and it's been sitting in my storage area above my tv in a esd bag

Try using a different ide cable. You can also try downloading and burning an iso of Knoppix linux. If it boots fine, you know what the prob is. G luck!

ya I should be able to get some more ide's from my cs teacher. today.


I would download knoppix but I'm on 56kand don't have time to wait.
 
ok I tried a new ide cable...nothing same error

tried using a boot disk from http://www.bootdisk.com and I get a disk I/O error :mad:

I brought it in to school today so I'll have my cs teacher help me out and try and get it straighten out.

unless anybody else can give me an idea about what I could do.
 
could be a bad hdd controller in the mobo.

take it to a techie shop and have them check it.
 
turned out to be the cd was bad. Cause my cs teacher let me use one of the spare win2000 cd and it read it so I guess I'll wait till the new cd comes.
 
you GOTTA be kidding... this is almost as bad as the n00btard who took... ah, lemme tell it to ya like this...

guy posts for help saying that dos recognizes his hdd's, windows sez they're there... but they don't show up in My Computer.
half of everybody bounces ideas back and forth for at least an hour, before he posts:
"oh i just remembered i forgot to install the sata drivers. do you think that could be the problem?" it was at this point that i wished i could shove my fist through my monitor and have it come out his and klonk him on the shnoz.
 
Just read thru that thread right from the start and by the end of the first post I knew it was the xp cd. He probably just drag and drop copied the files over and expected it to boot :rolleyes:
 
ya ya but this was my only cd and it had worked a month earlier when reinstalling on my main box and it had then sat in my cd folder since then so it shoud've been fine. hey but at least i didn't screw up the hardware install and set mom back almost $600
