here's the deal - I am trying to reinstall XP on my SFF system, it is running with 2.4 Ghz 512 Ram. Problem is...right when the reinstallation begins the comp totally shuts down...

I am guessing this is becuz of overheating. comp is running at 84 C (not good lol) for the CPU but 46 C for the system. The temp Tag is 68 C so is it true that the temp tag is a sort of mark b4 the comp shuts down?

Any ideas?

Dude, 84c for the processor????!!!! I'd say that's the processor right there. That processor is burning itself alive!

yeah, lol, the question really wasnt "is my proc ok?" it was more like asking does the CPU Tag Temp meant what i thought it did? :(

?

:p Haha ya, I'd say it's heat related. :p Of course it's from the safety shutdown setting!

Reseat your chip immediately with thermal paste! It must not be making correct contact with the die. If it's an XP, you do know your chip is supposed to die @ 85° C, right? :p

I know this isn't answering your question, however... What is wrong with you? Aren't you the least bit concerned that your processor is (quickly) burning itself to death? You almost certainly fucked up big time when you installed the HSF (assuming there even IS one).

Also, your BIOS options are in your motherboard manual. I assume you haven't cracked the spine on that mofo.

tks for the post...really. Believe it or not i have more than 1 computer...and the SFF is turned off until i get some thermal paste. Honestly though, your post helped not the slightest bit.

Temp tag is when the CPU goes into automatic shut down mode after its reached is thermal limit either via the mobo BIOS or built into the CPU core like the P4's have.

In regards to paste, order Arctic Silver 5, its the best there is and be sure to apply it correctly according to their website.

AS5 Installation

thanks for the link, though i have already ordered some GEIL. Seems this is a common problem with SFF systems, but mistakes are good to learn from :D

Common problem? Um no. It IS a common problem if you don't properly install a CPU though.
