I have an old 900 mhz athlon that I have decided to try to overclock, for a little more performance and some experience before I try it on a system that matters. It will eventually be used as a file/media server once a new system is constructed.
System rundown
CPU: Athlon "thunderbird" 900 mhz
Board: Abit KT7 (bios A9, recognizes chips up to 1.4)
512 PC133 Crucial SDRAM
CPU HSF: Thermaltake volcano 10 (recently purchased to help with anticipated heat)
Problem: I can go into the bios and change the "CPU" setting to any range of speed I choose, anywhere from 400 to 1400 mhz. I currently have that set to 1000. This changes the multiplier to 10 (etc) with the bus speed of 100 (cannot change either manually).
However, when the system boots, it states that I have a 900 mhz chip. CPU-Z confirms 9x100. Checked bios again. It says 1000, 10x100.
Unfortunately, since the system is installed and running, I cannot see any serial numbers on the CPU.
So the question is, were athlons of this time multiplier locked, and if not, what could I be doing incorrectly?
