problem installing maxtor hdd1 for storage

thanks for taking time to read my thread.
when i fire up my comp. with new hdd in for stoage. the system just stops during the system start up. i cant do anything during this time except turn off system or reboot it.
i need windows xp to pickup this hdd so i can make sure its correctly working.
what could be causing this hangup during startup?

Do you have the drives set to master and slave? or cable select? if cable selectr try specifyingh it to the apporpriate designation as some drives dont play well with cable select and i've run into that problem before.
