Printer randomly prints out pages

We have an issue that we haven't been able to lick yet. One of our remote stores is having a problem where their printer connected to a Windows 2000 server is randomly printing pages with characters on them (They look like shapes/symbols). Usually, one page or two and this happens periodically during the day without any user intervention.

I've seen this problem before but I can't remember the cause of the problem. Can anyone help me out?

In my expierence that kind of problem has been linked back to the following: corrupted drivers, failing printer cable, or a software problem in the PC.

A woot goes out to Seattle, man I miss her. Well mostly Issaquah (down with Samamish!). :p
 
That's what stumping us.

1) We replaced the printer
2) Replaced the parallel cable with USB cable
3) Installed new drivers (that came with new printer)

Still get exact same problem as we had with the old printer? :(

Since this is a "remote" store (In San Diego), it is very difficult for us to troubleshoot this via Windows Terminal, oh well.

I live pretty close to Issaquah, in fact, my kids go to preschool there. :) Lovely little town.

I don't know why but it only sounds like some hacker's getting access to it (since it's remote). You know what to do with that...

Doubtful that it is a hacker attack because it is behind a router that is set up as a VPN tunnel between our company and the store. Only way to connect to the store is to access the VPN tunnel from behind our company network OR from the inside of the store.

Unless there are hackers who knew how to hack a VPN tunnel, I don't think so.

I'll check for possibility of virus or spyware...

I've had this happen to me once, similar. It prints out random symbols too. I forgot how I fixed it though. I think I shut it down for like a couple of days then I had it back up and it doesn't do it anymore.

when you installed the new drivers....were ALL the printers and their drivers removed from the computer before you installed the new ones? Also, what model printer is it?

I lived in Issy for about 10 years, went to SunnyHills Elementary, PineLake Middle School, and freshman year at Issaquah High. So I was on the hill, which is now Samamish if I heard correctly.
 
what type of printer is it?

what software are you using?

are you running any terminal software?

have you checked the event log for anything sus?
 
are you using post script or pcl drivers? i'd switch to pcl if you're using postscript.
