printer install error - Unable to install printer

Enviroment: Win2k sp4

When trying to install an hp laserjet 1000 printer - using lpt1 and the latest drivers from hp.

"Unable to install printer. Operation could not be completed"

I have ensured the spooler service is running and tried to even manually install the pritner to no avail .

anybody got any ideas?

What is your parallel port set at in the BIOS?

good question, it is on a laptop in a remote location. IT was working till the end user received an out of memory error and had ot restart the system.
