Prime95 failed after small OC?

So i have my AMD 64 3000+ Venice at stock cooling, voltage at 1.425 (stock is 1.4), and Ram at 220mhz.

I failed prime95 1 hour into test. It gave me a sumerror (hardware failure). My FSB is 220, or 1.982 ghz. What could be the problem? Im gonig to try again with my ratios set at 5:4 for ram and memory

take your memory down real low and drop your multiplier. Then OC as high as you can. This gives max mobo. then go back to 200 and make memory 1:1 and test with memtest...this gives you max memory clock.

THEN find max CPU OC.

Ok, so drop my multi to around ~5x (if i read the sticky right), drop my memory to DDR 333 (or 5:4), (thats how it reads on my ABIT AN8 bios), And OC my cpu to max?

Then Make my mem DDR400 again and try memtest, then do cpu OC?

I hope i read it correctly...


Edit: Oh btw, my motherboard doesnt have clockgen support? (ABIT AN8)

I would drop the mem lower so you know its not a factor at all....but as long as you keep an eye on CPUZ and the memory doesnt go over 200 or whatever its rated then 333 should be fine.

Alright, followed the guide. Apparently my motherbaord wont go over 224 fsb. WTF!?!

Ok, so I NEED a good overclocker becuase theres no way im stayin stock. Is my motherboard faulty, or is there something i can do without RMA?

Pretty much.. But, it's shady at best to return something because it does not OC well.. If it runs @ stock speed then there is nothing wrong with it.. Buy another and sell your non-OCer to someone..
Not all mobo's oc well, and even the brands/models that usualy do oc well, sometimes don't

Well, i ran p95 on my stock settings on my board last night, it rebooted randomly tellin me errors... So im pretty sure my board is bad. I'll RMA tomorrow.

I've read this whole thread I've seen nothing to suggest an RMA, yet (or isolation of the mobo as the cause of a bad OC, could be cpu, psu, ram, etc)...
I dumped an inch of water into the bottom of my case a few days ago, dried it out, had boot issues, and still persisted (now it is fine) and fixed it. If the RAM is dropped to a 1:2 divider, the cpu is at a 6x multi, the RAM vdimm is bumped from 2.6-2.8 or so, the HTT link multi is set to 3x, messed with any chipset/htt voltage options, and still can't get above 224 then I don't know what to say.

It's the prime95@stock that led me to believe it's a setting issue. Usually if a board is broken, it's busted and not going to run, or a similar issue. What I would do is try to make the board run prime95 @ stock first. Try bumping up the CPU voltage a tad bit (1.45-1.5 volts should be fine) and then running prime. You could have a bad CPU (unlikely), and not a bad mobo. I only speak from my experience, where often times I'm worried that my PC isn't capable of hitting overclocks due to reboots or prime failures, only to see that I've forgotten to change the HTT multi, turn on ACPI, or other stuff. My board wouldn't do anything over 310mhz until I bumped the voltage on my chipset/htt bus (not sure if you have this option). Also make sure that stock means stock (default bios settings for memory/cpu/etc), as it only takes one variable to screw stuff up, and there are tons of them.
