Just looking through the Egg and noticing the 6420 and the 6750 are just about the same price and the 6550 is about $30 cheaper. Judging from the specs, both the 6550 and the 6750 are a good bit faster than the 6420. Is this just a matter of an older processor not selling out fast enough or is their something I'm not seeing that would put the 6750 and 6420 on close footing?

The key is pricing. For such a low price, the E6750 is a powerhouse performer. This is basically intended to grab market share, since if you were a consumer who knew what to buy, you'd obviously grab an E6750 rather than the lowly E6420 for the same price. And you'd obviously prefer it to the AMD X2 6000+ which, while equally fast at stock speeds, falls far behind as the E6750 is overclocked to 3GHz and beyond.

the price of CPU's many times, especially in the same family like you are looking at, is determined by anything except performance, supply, demand, reputation for overclockability, etc.....since you dont seem intent on overclocking, get the cheaper one

Yes, your assessment is correct.
The E6420 has been replaced with the E6750. The E6420 has reached EOL, so as Abu mentioned, the price is stuck there since Intel didn't lower it when the new chips came out.
The E6550 replaces the E6320, but with its low multiplier, its not worth buying unless you really like an OC'ing challenge, lol. The E6600 was replaced with the E6850, but its not worth buying since it has the same OC potential as the E6750 (around 4Ghz max). Besides, if you want to spend $300 on a CPU, get a Q6600 instead.
My E6750 rig("new rig" in my sig) can reach 3.8Ghz.
