Preowned 30" IPS - Any Experience?

Hey folks,

I see there's a wealth of knowledge and (more importantly) hands on experience with 30" displays on this forum, so I wondered if anybody could help me with my conundrum.

I'm a professional photographer in Scotland, UK, and I have two NEC LCD2490WUXI2 monitors in my home stuido/office space. I've ALWAYS been tempted by 30" (not interested in 27") and have decided to sell one of my NECs since it rarely gets used and put the proceeds into a preowned 30" display just to see what it's like.

I am aware of the risks of buying preowned hardware and would love to hear if any of you folks bought an expensive second hand monitor and had problems with it.

These are the monitors I've been looking for on ebay & locally:

Dell 3007, 3008 (the 3011 is too expensive, unfortunately)
HP ZR30
Apple Cinema 30

Are there any others I should consider?

A ZR30 sold locally just yesterday for £495ish and I was gutted because that's a great price for that screen, and I'm led to believe it still had 2 years warranty left on it.

Thanks

I recently purchased a pre-owned NEC 3090 monitor for about USD$900 and it has been great. The only minor thing is a small stuck pixel on the upper right hand corner.

I took a big risk at buying the monitor online w/o actually looking at the physical unit but lord behold things turned out okay.

My PA301W just arrived today!

@ 450, my budget is whatever I get if I sell the 24" NEC, so I'm guessing around the £500 mark. This is not bad since many preowned 30" displays sell for about that much. I have reservations about selling both of my NEC displays since if the new display doesn't work out I have nothing to fall back on, whereas if I keep one NEC then I've always got a good screen to work with.

@ wasserkool, I'd kill for a NEC 3090 but it's way out of my price range even preowned. There's currently one on ebay UK going for £750 ono with a year's warranty remaining... but the guy sold it and got negative feedback and has relisted it, so something's not right there...

FYI NEC's warranty are not transferable. So even if the first user only have the monitor for a few months and resells it you will not get the remaining warranty.

I have bought my last 5 monitors online with no issue. The first 2 were together and just cheaper TN screens, but came exactly as described from a seller on eBay (no issues, no dead pixels). The second 3 were together and bought from a [H] member in the FS/FT. All 3 came as described and were also in great condition.

The main thing is ensuring you ask about the condition and get lucky with a reputable seller (or one that at least knows a bit about monitors to look for stuck/dead pixels). Even with good pictures you cant tell perfectly a monitors condition until it is in front of you.

CCFLs get dimmer over time. I wouldn't buy a used LCD unless it I could determine hours and it was less than 5000, the lower the better, some warranty would be nice as well.

AFAIK this is very common; most manufacturers do not offer transferable warranties because they basically undermine the value and appeal of new merchandise. It has been my experience however that this is sometimes overlooked in favour of making the best impression on the customer - eg, if you possess the original purchase receipt for the hardware, the warranty may be honoured regardless of who you are. I can't speak for NEC, but other vendors are willing to flex a little (or a lot) in this area.

@ Grentz, that's nice to hear. I suppose there's no telling when a display might choose to give up the ghost, so even if it works perfectly when you first get it, it might develop a fault soon after.

Thanks for the input.

ccfls break long before the loss of brightness could become a problem

Not true. I have had two Dells get noticeably dim after 2.5 years, one of them was the one I mentioned earlier that had developed a yellowish tint as well. The main reason I am not sold on Dells being the end all be all.

It has nothing to do with Dell. Dell only puts panels in a case, Samsung/LG are the main suppliers of actual panels to Dell.

But it will affect all CCFLs. Some people don't notice because it is a gradual process, but if you have a calibration device and you have been taking measurements since new, you will spot the trend easily.

My NEC when I last measured it a 12000 hours, had lost 50% of it's brightness.

New it was 140-400, now it 70-200.

yes but since you usually don't use 100% brightness from the start it should always be easy to compensate by increasing said brightness
never had a tft where 100% wasn't way too bright anyway
