From what I've read in the last 24 hours of the heated up debates, this is what I will believe is going to happen. Of course in T-minus 4 hours we will all probably know:
Enthusiasts:
The Ultra version of NV40 (6800 ultra) will be released tomorrow and is going to cost $499. It will be the best card out of all versions released by either nvidia or ati (don't call me a fanboy. Both cards will be great, but I have a feeling that nvidia will win this round, barely).
In just over 1.5 months time (may 31), ATi will release their enthusiast version of the R420, called the X800Xt and X880XT (PCIe version), which will perform very well, but will not quite catch up to nvidia (very close though). It will be priced at the identical price, and will be a great card.
The overclocking abilities of either card will decide the fate of the overclockers that we are, and will be the prefered choice, since both cards will perform similar, and will cost the same. But the fact that ATi is over a month late, will hurt them sales-wise.
High-End-Mainstream:
The non-ultra NV40 (6800) will be released tomorrow as well (as nvidia has always done multiple launches on the same day), and will cost $399. It will have a lot slower ram (dependant on the board makers) and will also be clocked slower (overclocking ability undeterimened at this time. Sorry, I can't predict everything).
ATi's response to this is going to be the X800 Pro, which will have a lower clock, lower ram, compared to the X800 XT. But it will do very well compared to the 6800 Non-Ultra. This will probably be the closest match ever between Nvidia and ATi in the history of the rivalry! Both cards will be priced the same, and the winner will depend on the overclocking/modding capabilities.
Cost-Efficient-Mainstream:
I'm not sure what Nvidia will come out with here.
ATi will have their X800SE which will be much underclocked, with even slower ram, and will basically suck all around. They will succeed in blocking the modders from making this a mainstream card (probably by a different board layout, or insulation of chip pins), and will be very cost effective for it's price ($299), but will probably fail over all because it will not perform as well as the 9800 pro, which is cheaper even right now.
Review (for those who choose not to read this post):
Enthusiasts:
6800 Ultra: Highest performing card out of all cards released within the next few months
X800XT and X880XT : Great cards, and very close the the 6800U. May ovcerclock better than the 6800 Ultra, but remains to be seen.
Both priced at $499 US
Mainstream:
6800 Non-Ultra: Well priced card at $399 US.
X800 Pro: Also a well priced card at $399 US.
Battle of the beasts right here. Neither card wins out-right.
Lower end:
X800 SE: Crap card. 9800 Pro is cheaper and better.
