I was in a rush to reassmble my PC and accidentally stuck a 6pin PCIe power connector into the 4pin ATX power connector on my mobo. The connector did fit, with reversed polarity. I didn't discover this ooops until I started troubleshooting why nothing happened at all when I hit the power switch.

My natural first reaction was on the lines of "oh *($&!@# I just bricked my PC" even though no magic smoke came out. My supposition that something was dead was reenforced when I connected the right connector and the system failed to post. I needed to get my PC up asap for somerthing so I stuck in a second PSU and it booted successfully. At this point I assumed the PSU had died. About an hour I shut down and went back to trouble shooting with what I assumed was a dead PSU at which point the system booted normally. :D

I'm not sure if I did something wrong when I initially tried to reconnect it the right way, or the magic smoke containment device overheaded and shut down. Regardless, I think I've found a brand for life. The price premium involved is cheaper than one smoked system.

You wouldn't kill a PSU by plugging a connector in the wrong place. You might fry whatever it's plugged into, but there isn't much of a risk of PSU damage. You should be thanking the manufacturer of your mobo, not PCP&C.

I'll bet on PC Power and Cooling, Inc. although the MOBO may have reverse polarity protection as well. The power supply had shut down and latched off.
