I've just bought a new laptop, with a Core i3 330M processor. (I was going to buy one with a Core i5 540M, but they were too heavy...). I'm getting about 2.2k ppd at the moment running A3 WUs. What I was curious about are ppd numbers for other processors:

E8400 3GHz
P8600 2.4GHz (or whatever stock is)
T9550

E8400 is about 2800 PpD (one of my desktops has this exact CPU).
P8600 is about 1000 PpD (one of my laptops has this exact CPU).

The T9550 will probably get a little better than the P8600, but no by much.

Out of curiosity, what is an A3 work unit? I am debating on whether I should try running the SMP client on my current laptop with the 2.5ghz Turion II X2 Ultra. I think i'm getting about 500pts per day right now running just the uniprocessor classic client.
 
An AMD dual core 2.5 should get roughly (don't have one) the same as an Intel dual core 2.5 (maybe a little less, but not by much). With that said, the P8600 numbers I gave above will give you some idea. I would suspect around 1000 PpD. Obviously doubling your current output. The newer SMP2 client is pretty stable and the bonuses apply.

This would require running the laptop 24/7 to meet bonus deadlines so keep it cooled down.

Actually, the AMD CPU will put out a decent amount less PPD, especially with SMP2.

Running it in the background, I noticed that Windows 7 likes to split the load between the 2 cores and keeps both at roughly 50% utilization at all times. At 50% utilization, coretemp tells me that my CPU is running at a constant 61-66 degrees C. My Turion X2 is based on Regor and if my memory is still correct, maximum safe temperature for this processor is around 72 degrees C. I suspect that if I am hitting mid 60's with 50% utlization, I may be running too close to the ragged edge running the SMP client since I would suspect it would be pushing nearly 100% utilization at all times.

If my computer room didn't get so hot, i'd try to see what my desktop rig in my sig can do. Depending on how much I get back from my income tax returns, maybe i'll see if I can build a cheap dedicated rig(you guys call them boxen?) with a cheap AMD X4 cpu and run it in a cooler part of the house.

I didn't know AMD was so bad off running the SMP client. That will be a problem for me since I only run AMD stuff. Just my personal preference as I refuse to support Intel. If AMD went under, consumers would be so worse off as Intel could return to the old days when they practically charged monopoly prices.

Don't worry about the cpu brand you run, part of it is down to the older architecture of the AMD chips, some of it is down to intel skewing the compiler to work better on their chips. At the end of the day you run what you can afford to buy and run. i can afford to run a big rig getting nearly 100kPPD but i can't afford the set up costs. Donate what cpu power you have - it all helps at the end of the day
 
2.2 athlon duel core gets 750ppd 1.8 core2 duo gets 1200ppd both run smp and win7

That is what i'm doing. I just wish AMD was more competitive as my gut tells me that even their new Thuban 6 core coming out is gonna get destroyed in comparison to a high end Core i7 or that new Gulftown. If the pricing rumors are true, it will be a bargain though which is what AMD has always been good at.

I would be interested as well considering that those were the days when AMD literally destroyed everything Intel could put out performance wise. Still remember my old Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 X2.
 
Okay, i've got the SMP client running on my desktop rig right now and i'll leave it running this weekend to see what kind of performance it can give. What is shocking the hell out of me is how hot my Phenom II X4 965 is running even though i've only got it just barely overclocked to 3.5ghz. With all 4 cores at 100% load, it is pushing 56-57 degrees C on a processor that is rated for a maximum of 61 degrees C. It even hit a max of 58 degrees before my cpu fan kicked into high speed. This is with my computer room currently at a frigid temperature as i've got the windows open to air the room out this cold night. It shows that my stock HSF is currently spinning along at 3600rpms and is very close to maximum speed. My laptop will continue to just run the classic systray client.

I just got a $100 gift certificate to Micro Center, and I guess that is where I will spend it as summer is almost hear, and these temps are unacceptable........

I wonder if I should try reseating the HSF.........
 
Get a better cooler. There is no way I would recommend sticking with a reference cooler at all if you're overclocking, even if you're not doing anything. I predict, though, you should be getting a tad over 6000ppd.
 
get a xig s1283.. dirt cheap and should help you hit 3.8ghz under 50C.. i ran my phenom II 940 @ 55-59C for over a year without any issues..

The Phenom II 965 X4's run at 3.4ghz stock, and I simply upped the multiplier(unlocked processor) for fun to obtain 3.5ghz. I am running the stock voltage. Rather than reseating my current setup, I thin i'm going to just upgrade the fan as summer is coming and my computer room bakes. Even with the window unit on full blast, room temperature can hit almost 90 degrees on a hot summer day due to the room not being climate controlled with the rest of the house. My previous computer was a AMD Athlon 64 X2 2.2ghz that used to make me bite my finger nails as it would hit almost 59 degrees during the summer with the upgraded Coolermaster fan I had on it.

If anyone happens to be around Cincinnati and wants to pick up that old processor, let me know as I have no use for it. The motherboard it was attatched to shorted out and I am not going to bother trying to find a Socket 940 mobo just to run such an old processor.

I am debating on making the move to water coooling my setup as that would allow me to really do some serious overclocking. It would also help me feel much better about leaving my desktop rig running 24/7 as my biggest concern is dust as it is dusty around my place. I laptop crashed again while I was sleeping, so I think i'm going to only let it fold while i'm using it during the day.

whats the actual amd rating name on the processor? is it one of the old windsor cores or one of the low power brisbane cores? seeing as how it was running at 59C im guessing its one of the windsor processors..

with an ambient temp like that your most likely going to have to go with water cooling..

if you take the stock fan off and replace it with a 120mm fan and just zip tie it or take some clear silicone and glue it to the heatsink with the silicone you should drop the temp by 3-4C and make it much quieter..

A 120mm won't fit as my ram modules are in the way. While it was at Micro Center, I tried to have them upgrade with the Zalman 120mm AM3 cooler but it wouldn't fit. On my Gigabyte motherboard, the ram slots are practically right next to the cpu socket.

I just took a good close look at my cpu through the clear plexiglass, and the factory fan/heat sink setup seems to be a very beefy looking piece of hardware. I've never seen so many heat pipes on a factory stock cpu cooler before.

I'm looking at all of the water cooling stuff right now. Is there any system that is better than any other? Any brand names to stay away from?

I'm getting poor PPD production on all of my systems running the SMP2 client. Even my Core2 processors produce under 4000 PPD no matter how many cores I throw at them. Some systems just don't work well with the new bonus scheme and A3 WUs.

During setup, I entered these switches to use constantly, -verbosity 9 -smp and I had it default to advmethods during the setup option.

I am noticing that trend as well. I did a 5 minute search on Bing to see what others are getting and it doesn't look pretty for AMD folks. I have mine just barely overclocked at 3.5ghz. I am not a points hunter though, so it doesn't really bother me and I am just trying to do my part for a greater good, and also to try to help this team as much as I can. Until AMD goes under, noone will ever find a non AMD processor in my computers.

Sadly, I wish I had time to game all day. When I do game, I mostly use my Xbox 360 with the exception of the few PC games that are worth buying these days. I've only been running my desktop rig since yesterday though.

What monitoring program do you use? Because I have a very strong suspicion that whatever you're using is out of date and doesn't calculate the bonus correctly. Either that or you don't have enough SMP units done to actually get a bonus.

I'm only on my 2nd SMP WU right now. What do you mean monitoring program? I just link to my user statistics from my laptop which is running the classic uniprocessor client. Once my laptop finishes this current bigass WU that it has been working on for 3 days, i'm going to switch that over to the SMP client as well now that I have found that it isn't as scary as I thought it was. Ever since Win95, I have gotten spoiled by GUI's........

yeah the stock heatsink is nice.. but im surprised you can fit a 120mm fan on top of it.. even if you had it off center how it sits on the heatsink it would still do better then the 92mm fan that comes on it..

as far as the PPD goes.. 2000 is way to low for that processor.. i was doing 6000 PPD on my 940 @ 3.4ghz with the VM clients.. so you should be doing the same if not better with the winSMP client..

i recommend using the newest version of the HFM.net client to keep track of your PPD..

For the new work units that Stanford is giving out there's a bonus associated with it, depending on how quickly you finish the work unit. The units themselves are small, about 300-500 points, but the bonus is what makes running SMP so much more profitable from a ppd standpoint. To qualify for the bonus you have to have a passkey and you have to have folded 10 WUs on that passkey. So until you get a passkey and complete 10 units on it, you're going to be staying at about 1500ppd. After that the bonus kicks in and you get a lot more points (I get between 6-7x more points per WU because of the bonus).

As for monitoring programs, basically when installed they keep track of all your different clients for you. They show you stuff you can't easily find out, like deadline, credit per WU, as well as times per frame, ppd, and a whole lot of other information. But if you're going to run SMP their major benefit is that they help calculate your bonus for you and work out the real credit value of the work you're sending in, not just the base value. Probably the best one out now is HFM.NET, there's a thread on the DC forums here somewhere. They can monitor clients over a network too, so if you install it on your laptop you can add the SMP client from your desktop and providing you have a network connection set up between the two you can monitor both from your laptop, and vice versa.
