I just got the Antec Smart Power 350w PS with the case I bought and I've noticed that it sometimes sounds like it's change fan speed depending on the task I'm doing. Does that mean I don't have enough power for my system or is it a function of the power supply trying to be quieter when idle.

Thanks

It's got an variable-speed fan that spins faster as the system heats up.
It probably gets a little louder if you start gaming as opposed to just surfing the net.

Normal and do not worry about it. You know the fan is doing its thing as it speeds up and slows down. Only speeds up when the temp rises to cool it down more.

But is it that sensitive, that if I click on a program to open it should it slow down just while that program opens and then goes back to a more consistent speed?

hrm, that fans in ur PSU are just taking the temps from the PSU. So the fact that it is changing that much worries me.

i can understand them rev'ing when u have been running for a while or on shutdown and boot...but beyond that rapid fluctuations would concern me

Ya thing to much stuff for this PS? I've used an Antec 430 True Power and never had this happen. I may order a new Antec 380w True Power. I tried one of those with an Sonata case and it seems a ok.

With the 3 drives and 2 opticals, not to mention the 5900, I think you might be close to the max.

Do you use mbm or something like that? You might want to see if there is variation on the rails.

Also, are you sure that the sound change is coming from the power supply? It could be the case fans or something that are slowing down due to a voltage problem.

Well, I have an Antec 430w True in my other case, but I want to sell it with the SOHO case. Also, the newer Antec PS have SATA connectors now and I'd like to have that also. I think I'll just go and get a new 430 True and have my wife castrate me.

well went and bought a NEW Antec 430w True Power and installed last night. Now it runs without up and down surges. I believe I was hearing the rear fan speed up and down depending on the task I was doing, but it should not do that that fast. So, I think that the 350w just wasn't cutting it. The True Power series are great PS. I've had Enermax before, but I think Antec is better. Just my O.
