Power Supply problems

I have an antec 450 watt that i took to have tested and it says that it is fine. The problem is that when i plug in the 4 prong power connector to the board it shuts down in about 5 secs. I did notice some smoke come out the back and it went away and i am hoping that the unit is just not able to push enough power now. I am having it tested now in a computer at a shop with my video card to see if it is ok as well. Could the test possibly not be checking the proper output of the unit? The board is a new msi athlon 64 to replace the gigabyte that i fried with a small dash of water. water cooling is very fun. any help would be great!!!!!!

"notice some smoke come out the back and..."

Funy thing about electroncics, once the smoke gets out it seldom can be put back in a cost effective manner. ;)

I am not sure I understand all of that, it was tested before, smoke , now being tested, but bottom line, if there was smoke and no-one has repaired anything, i would not trust any of my equipment near that power supply, most certainly if when I plugged something into it, it shut down. Oh BTW typically plugging power connections in and out of equipment while its running is a bad thing.

Really sounds like you need a new supply unless this testing and possible repair is super cheap or free.

watts dont mean much these days
its the proper distribution of amps to the right rails
its very likely your overloading (make that overloaded) the +12V rail
that is likely an older supply geared to wards powering the mobo and cpu off the +5V rail
and your current config draws the power off the +12V rail

as mentioned once the magic smoke escapes....

list your full config
(anything that employs power, incluuding mouse and keyboard)
