Potential HDD problem?

Alright here's the deal. I have an 80GB Maxtor SATA HDD and whenever the drive is plugged in to the pc I'll turn on the pc and less than 2 seconds later it shuts itself off before it can even POST. I don't have a different machine to test it on. Anyone here have any ideas as to what the problem may be? please?

Do you have access to or know how to use a multimeter ?
Sounds to me like your HDD motor probably shorted to ground and thankfully your PSU is smart enough to shut down before you waste something else.
If you have a DVM, check the resistance on the pinout versus a known good drive.
hope this helps.

It may be as simple as your PSU is on its limit.
Try unplugging other things and see if the situation improves.

As quisman said, it could be a fault in the drive drawing too much power, not necessarily a short to ground.
Drawing too much current could trigger this, but his point is possible.

Specs are:

Corsair 400W PSU
2GB Crucial RAM
9600GT OC
80GB Seagate
160GB WD
C2D E6750
4 80mm case fans
1 120mm fan
Creative Labs sound card.

And i've also tried unhooking the 160GB WD drive and leaving the HDD in question still plugged in which ends up with the same results.
