I'm going to take a wild guess and suggest that spambots used post deletions for nefarious reasons to get around the requirements to post in the For Sale/Trade forum.
 
It goes way back when the forum first started and all of the bells and whistles were all operational. As they were abused, they were taken offline. We would have people post a thread and get an argument started and then delete the thread and start another one. It got to epidemic proportions so it was removed. It made moderating the forums extremely difficult.
