I built a rig in few months back and have two MSI lightning 6970 cards. I game at 2560x1600 when using a single screen and at 4960x1600 when using SoftTH to enable three monitors (20, 30, 20). While the performance in terms of image quality and frame rates has been good, I am getting annoyed by the frequency of lookups and crashes (which include DirectX errors like in the screenshots below). These errors occur maybe 15% of the time in BF3, Mass Effect 3, Skyrim, and X3 Albion Prelude, and it doesn't seem to matter if it is on a single or triple screens.

The first bit of advice I get is usually to disable Crossfire. Doing that does seem to alleviate the problem, which makes me wonder if dual cards, Crossfire in particular, are problematic tech...better in theory than practice. Note that I use the Crossfire profile particular to each game when I play it.

What are others' experience gaming with dual cards, and do AMD owners using Crossfire have any words of advice?

Not that I am aware of. Where is that setting.

Forgot to mention that I am using Catalyst 12.2
 
Quite a few people with this problem from what I've seen. Just google a few of the keywords.

I received it once with my old 7970 while playing BF3. Have you done any ssd optimization? I reduced the virtual memory to help my ssd and I believe that was what was causing my issue. I went back into the virtual memory and changed it back to a system managed size.
 
I disabled Crossfire and am no longer experiencing lockups and crashes in games. But I have both cards, and I would like to use both cards.

Now that I seem to have traced the problem specifically to Crossfire, how can I troubleshoot/fix it?

I followed the advice of someone to do a complete uninstall of AMD drivers, and then a reinstall. I followed these steps:

"Disable Auto Updates

uninstall CCC 12.x, wipe drivers, use driver cleaner, catalyst cleaner

check bios options to ensure PCI-e is priority

Unplug LAN/Internet

boot windows in normal mode, Make sure Card Hardware is listed as "VGA Adapter" and not "AMD/ATI xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx"
(that way you know all drivers are gone.)

Shut Down, Unplug PC, Unplug Card, remove card, Set it aside, Unplug Boot HDD, , Power On PC Without GPU in it, and Boot Drive unplugged (so BIOS Resets Component Addresses).

plug in the Boot Drive, Install Graphics Card, Boot into Windows, if it starts searching for drivers, let it search, leave internet unplugged until search fails.

After Hardware Install fails to find drivers, click OK, plug in LAN/internet, goto AMD's Site, Download 12.1 Cat (12.2/12.3 suck.)

Once Download Finishes, Unplug LAN again, Install cat 12.1, reboot, (optional: reboot again), Go into CCC and Disable Auto Updates.

configure everything, Test in Heaven, Furmark, and any other benchmark you want. "



Not sure what else I can do to try to get Crossfire working properly. Can anyone advise?
