I was going to possibly set up another boxen, only with Intel Q6600 this time instead of my AMD. Is the MSI X48 Platinum a good solid board or is there something better in its price range ~$150 with 4 pcie?

 
yes.

Intel based boards are decent in this series.
 
If you actually only setup 2 VMs, then 4 should be fine. If however you try and setup 4 VMs per this thread, then you will probably be better off with 6. 4VMs will take 2.56GB of Physical RAM and you'll want some for spare to keep the system somewhat responsive. I assume it is possible to do with 4 (assuming you are on a x64 OS), but you'll be cutting it pretty close.

After saying all of the above, I am on 4GB of RAM running 4VMs on my dedicated boxen (just started testing so can't provide concrete numbers as yet).
 
Cool, would you recommend Linux or windows? If Linux which distro is best? do you trust Newegg openbox?
 
for just a folding box, 4 should be fine(if 64 bit)

after 4 VM's, 1.4 Gig's is fine for GPU's and OS, because your not doing much else besides folding. I'm using 1 Gig now with 2 GPU's and Vista, and Internet radio, and FF, etc...

I've only had one experience with the 'eggs open box stuff and it was perfectly fine. It can be hit and miss, but from what I have read, a lot of people swear by it.

I'm not much of a fan of setting up linux VMs (others are, but frankly, I'm just lazy :D ). I am a notfred's VM appliance kinda guy. Don't have the time to learn or configure linux.

Im just a little wary of buying a ~$150 mobo and only getting a 30 day guarantee on it...

How many PPD is your Phenom making?

My PII 940BE at stock (was having issues with heat) is putting out 8K PpD via 4 notfred VMs. These numbers are not concrete and I'll be in a better position to validate them later today after they have run for a while
