I was getting 300-400kbs in steam /valve downloading cs4 (on sale lol)... on vista 64 machine with 3com network card... and 200kbs or less on the other machine downloading the same game via linksys xtreme ? 54g card... both cards are 54g... both cards have similar network options. after apply the changes i believe the ping improved (last night we were in 80s late last night and today in 50's but this could be network related...).. most importantly both are more near 400kbs at the same time now.

there are some notes:
1. i use a dlink gaming router 54g... with traffic shaping turned on at near default settings, while game fuel is off (so both functions can exist)...

2. the wireless is set to 54g... on the router...

3. i use tcp optimizer from:http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
make sure to know your mbs speed if its like 5mbs or 7mbs set it to optimize/custom and 5000 or 7000 or whatever you have (at work we have 10mbs up/down connection at 10000 setting)... then apply

4. i have tcp opens set to 50, not sure if this has an effect. this is changed from default 10
http://www.lvllord.de/
if new to you google "tcp patch"

5. i have made a registery change to use the chips on the network cards themselves rather then cpu power first... not sure if this has a positive/negative affect... i think on winxp machine

6. "disable 3rd party applications" in tools>internet options (or control panel).. then advanced... then uncheck 3rd party applications box... this is unrelated but please dont allow spyware toolbars on your pc

7. windows 32bit sp3 and vista 64bit sp1

ok.. sorry i just wanted to document all the changes i have made so i can see if they had an effect or not... now onto the reason why i wrote the post... some settings i changed. take note i dropped a bar from 5 to 4 (now im at very good not excellent)... but i'm not sure if that is unrelated

1. go to control panel in vista/winxp and were your network connection is, in properties configure your network adapater (or system>device manager>network card properties)

remember i have dlink (router), linksys(winxp) and 3com (vista 64).. however i did this or similar in both... however below is more related to vista 64

a. 54g(xpress) toggle to enabled
b. ap compatibility mode (higher performance)
c. ibss 54g mode- 54g performance or other 54g options... mine was set to a lower speed!
d. minimum power consumption (disabled) good or bad dont know

experimental (not tried yet)
e. romaing decisions (don't know which to try)
f. maxg 125mbs (enabled) with 54g router lol

2. get latest drivers i suppose before doing all this lol at guru3d.com

let me know if anyone else finds a difference

3. edit/add i forgot to mention:
i was getting 400(64) + 200(32) at the same time... however if i ran just the 32bit before i was unable to get past the 200-almost300 kbs mark with this machine... the 64bit was able to do 400-600 fluctuating on its own... the 32bit capped itself. after the changes it can now go to the same max/peak 400/600kbs

anyone try this? 2-3x increase in winxp transfer rates should be something worthwhile right?

last time i'll bump this. what happened to all the tweakers out there? if anyone is having wireless or network transfer speed issues try this!
