Possible Mobo or GPU failure

Rig in sig.

I was getting a few hard crashes lately and attributed it to heat. Just seemed like a heat related crash to me. I'm in Arizona and the ambient temp is increasing rapidly.

To the point - After the most recent hard crash the computer will boot up. I get my mobo screen but there is dots and squiggly lines everywhere, the letters are all crazy and all over the screen like hieroglyphics . The computer seems to boot normally barring the fact that the resolution seems stuck at 800 x 600. When I get into windows Vista it doesn't recognize a GPU. Just the integrated.

I haven't gotten a chance to take my GPU to a friends to see if I can get it running in his system. Just based on this do we think I lost my mobo or GPU? I'm torn on both... The mobo posts its screen so that makes me think it's fine, that and the integrated graphics enough to get into windows. Maybe the mobo is dying though and it isnt recognizing a perfectly good GPU.

Halp? Thanks. :)

Sounds like GPU. Just take it out and see what happens with integrated.

Sounds like the GPU died. Can you swap another card in? Test card in another machine?

I'm going to take it out tonight and see what happens with the integrated. I ordered a 5850 from Tigerdirect that was supposed to arrive today but they say it won't come till monday. Thanks for the replys guys.

yeah sounds like either the cards dying or some how the card bios became corrupt.. this happened with my 7800GT a while ago.. was overclocking, system crashed.. everything booted up but windows didnt recognize the card so i got to enjoy 2D memory buffering.. god it was so much fine trying to go to EVGA's RMA page in buffer mode.. would take 10 minutes just to scroll down half a page..

the intigrated graphics should hold you over until you get the new card.. you just wont be able to play any games..

I get to try the new card when I get off work tonight.

I was navigating tiger directs site this weekend in 800 x 600 and every moving graphic was creating crazy white flashes. I'm 95% sure that it is the GPU now, and I will update after I get the new card installed tonight. Over the weekend I reformatted and clean installed a new OS thinking that it might be driver side but no changes.

Installed the new sapphire 5850 last night, loaded drivers and bamo. Perfect.

So my EVGA 9800GX2 was fried. What the heck do I do with it now? I can't help but feel that I can do something productive with it whether that means trying to fix it somehow or sell it "as is" on ebay etc. Any ideas guys?

Also I was having a hard time finding a program that will monitor GPU temps under load. I could watch them through the Catalyst control panel when just sitting on desktop and they were sitting at 35C with 40% fan. Is there a way to test them under full load and monitor them at the same time? I seem to remember doing this with my GX2 way back when I first bought it...

Thanks guys.
