I have an old gateway (i'm using it as my linux pc) and i formatted the HDD and then it just goes into grub and it won't load anything...do i hafta clear the MBR? if that is the case, i can't boot from a cd at all, so i'm not sure how to get that to happen. i checked in the bios and made sure the optical drive was the first to boot and it still doesn't work. the drive is a toshiba dvd-rom, and i also have a sony CD-RW that's not being recognized. I tried putting the HDD into another computer and formatting it with partition magic 8.0. If I do that, can I install it on that system and not use a boot loader? I don't want to have one on the computer i'd install it on because they are annoying. it won't change anything on the current HDD, will it?

thanks,

alex
