Poor framerate in KotOR

I'm playing this game a second time as a dark jedi this time, and I noticed on the endar spire my framerate seemed crappy. I turned on fraps and noticed it was a bit low, usually 42 with no people on the screne on the spire.

An explosion would hit my system down to the 20s. And smoke would take the game down to 17fps. Now I don't think the game should be going this low on my system...

My game is on 1024x768 high detail. AA is turned off and AF is only at 2x. I get around 6,000 3Dmarks03.
 
try turning off vsync. or AF completely.

cod crawls like a diseased whore if i have even 2x AF on.
 
It won't matter if VSYNC is on or off, Triple Buffering is on.

I guess I'll try turning off the AF then.
