Police Seize Gizmodo Editor’s Computers

But it was wiped to prevent someone (in most cases a thief, not necessarily this case) from accessing important information.

Important information like, who to return the phone to, how to get in touch with Apple, what the direct phone number is of the guy, etc.?

I'm one of those folks who keeps an INCO entry in his phone.
I also have my phone identify who owns it when it's powered on.
I also have my COMPLETE contact information (even the cell phones phone number itself) filed under a contact entry matching that name.

I'd never brick the phone, because I'd never be able to get it back. I MIGHT contact my provider and have them drop the phone to non-call out mode, though. Oh, and yeah, I'd be calling my phone to try to get to whoever found it to help them make arrangements to get it back to me.
