This has probably been asked a thousand times, but anyway... i have 2 old Pocket PC's lying around gathering dust and want to convert one into an LCD. would love to use the touch screen functionality as well. Does anyway know of any info to do something similar to this: http://palmorb.sourceforge.net/index.html

Well, just about all of them plug into a USB port to sync up, so there has got to be a way to feed it info from your pc via USB and have it display that in various modes... if you do that, make sure you have easy access to the reset switch... because ppc2003 crashes a LOT... palm not so much. :)
 
If you have certain versions of Windows, you can use the Terminal Services Client on the PocketPC:

If you set up a virtual second display with some kind of statistics software on it and set the TSC to view that virtual display, I think you would have what you are looking for.

This is one of the mods I wanted to do about two years ago to an original Pocket PC (when MS renamed them from WinCE) It was a Jornada 525 and by todays standards, quite simple with large connectors inside. If what you have is a newer unit like the new RX3715 I just replaced the screen on, you will be out of luck directly interfacing the unit to your PC. I never did get that old screen to work outside of the original Pocket PC application... It seemed too difficult to be able to solder to any of the miniscule connections! And the newer screens have even smaller connectors!
So I second the use of terminal services or some other remote software capable of working with your particular flavor of PPC. Or, you could easily dismantle the PPC's, sell the parts on Ebay, and have PLENTY of $ to buy a purpose-built LCD with touchscreen! The screen module for my RX3715 cost $180 new, so it's a good bet you could get $100 for each screen, and maybe $50 for each PPC mobo and sell the adapters/docks separately too. BTW, if you do decide to use the PPC as a screen, remember that it will have very limited potential and will bog your system/PPC down more over USB (in terminal mode) when compared to a real touch screen LCD. There are 7" touch screen LCDs available these days with much higher resolution and larger size than any PPC for less then $450, some can be found for less then $400. Part out the PPCs and you have the cash. :D

Seriously, my PPC2003 has crashed maybe twice over the past several months of owning it. Thats much better than the old Jornada, stupid junkheap would crash if you looked at it wrong!!
Had to stick up for what I think is a great product.... Don't mean to hijack the thread. :)
 
heh -- well, glad your behaves better than mine... but I run GPS software (tomtom) on mine all the time and that might be causing the instability... I don't have a Palm OS device, but had one for a while and never had to reset it, but then again, I didn't run nearly as much on it as I do my PPC...
 
TS is a great idea! and so obvious.

also, yeah the OS does suck. They were O2 XDA's and i pretty quickly got tired of them and rolled onto the SE P910i. sooooooooooo much better.

 
Look into VNC instead, as Terminal Services locks the host PC (drops it to a login screen).

I hope you find something that'll work for you man but thanks a lot for the linkage! Something like this never even crossed my mind but I got it all setup with my Tungsten E and it works very well. Very cool.

Yes, but does it work with PPC 2003 ?? Anyone try that yet?

I've been looking for something like this too. I'm just wondering if this will work with PPC 2003SE. It only says PocketPC2002 and the link to the creator doesn't work.
 
Try the demo, also check this freeware media player remote and this tells you how to stream sound to your ppc but, more importantly imho, one simple change lets you stream video. Like, say, tv if you have an AIW or tuner card.

My ongoing prject is to mount a cradle for my old axim to the front door of my case. ;)

That would be the optimal sitch... have the cradle connection to the USB on your computer and that would be slick. Another great place for free PPC apps is
